I believe they are acceptable and its the differences that we have that make us beautiful. Even when God ordained Adam and Eve to fill the Earth and multiply he did not specify that it has to be strictly between people of the same race did he?
NisasPieces wrote: ↑20 Sep 2020, 12:01 In today's time and age, it is acceptable to be happy with whoever you choose. But there are some countries where tradition is more prioritized than modernization. There, they very much care about the race, color, culture and religion. I think complete acceptance all over the world will never be possible.
Chipochashe wrote: ↑20 Sep 2020, 15:09 There is nothing wrong with interracial marriages. Although things are seemingly better now - racism is still present even in today's society as evidenced by issues that continue to make headlines even in the US. In Kalayla's situation being biracial was just one of other factors that contributed to her troubles especially considering the time period of the story.
Ledi Daniel wrote: ↑20 Sep 2020, 16:20 Interracial relationship and marriage are becoming less controversial for several reasons including, awareness and social political influence. Jeannie doesn't delve into it extensively, but you can see kalaya's insecurities stemming from it.
dianaterrado wrote: ↑20 Sep 2020, 23:10I'd like to believe that in these modern times interracial marriage is very much acceptable. I think we have all grown out of the beliefs we used to have. Interracial marriage would surely have been met with criticisms and disagreement if it happened decades ago. I have to say though that it may have contributed to Kalayla's problems.Joseph_ngaruiya wrote: ↑01 Sep 2020, 02:59 Kalayla is biracial. What's your viewpoint on interracial marriages, especially in the present day? Do you think it's acceptable? Could it have contributed to the painful experiences that Kalayla goes through?
Indeed love should be the constant here. Today interracial marriages are widely accepted. Different parenting styles compromise the effectiveness of such relationships from baring positive results. The two families may have trouble adjusting to their different cultures. Kalayla is a victim of that as she grows up without a grandmother. Such marriages also trigger an identity crisis. In Jeannie's work, you can see that Kalayla is not in a position to identify herself with the dad or the mum. I also think Kalayla suffers from unnecessary attention because of her color. She's easily identifiable. Lena notices her from the crowd on different occasions, like when she first arrives in the city and when Kalayla interacts with Ray Ray.Aditi Sapate wrote: ↑21 Sep 2020, 09:35 Interracial marriages are not as widely accepted yet as we may have hoped, but we have come a long way from before. This was only possible due to the struggle faced by women like Kalayla.
If we lived in another part of the country, opinions might be different.

Everyone feels the effects of their heritage. Sadly, people of mixed race are often made to feel bad for who they are. It is shameful that this sort of thing still goes on.

Indeed, most of Kalayla's problems did not stem from her interracial background. Maureen is the one that suffered a big blow after being disowned and chased from her native home. With the current normalization of interracial marriages, people are coming into terms to accept the differences and embrace the diversity of the cultures.shamayelnur wrote: ↑27 Sep 2020, 07:48 interracial marriage should definitely be accepted in my opinion. Anyway, i believe it has been more normalized than earlier. and, I don't think Kalayla's hardship was dominated by the factor of her being biracial. I feel Kalayla suffered most for the lack of her father. And, I feel it was equally hard for her mother too

Comparatively, today it is on the lower end. Racial discrimination is declining with an increase in the sensitization of its effects. Jeannie portrays this idea by using Lena as a character who doesn't discriminate Kalayla for her background or status.ciecheesemeister wrote: ↑26 Sep 2020, 22:14 Of course it's acceptable. We are all human. Sadly, Maureen's parents reflect what all too many people still believe: that the color of a person's skin determines their worth.

Although time has passed and so much is changing in this technological era, the issue of disputing interracial marriages hasn't been faced out completely. There are still communities that believe, just like Maureen's mum did, that the blacks should stay where they belong, and if you ever have to work for them, you be polite, but don't you think about being something else. I was happy to notice that Jeannie twisted the presumed outcome of who Maureen could have been after being raised by her mother with such ideologies.Eutoc wrote: ↑26 Sep 2020, 07:46 Interracial marriage should actually be a norm. We currently live in a connected world, there should be much disparity between race. I believe geographical landmarks were a thing in the ancient times because it was quite substantial to easily connect with people in different locale.
