Review by Bertha Jackson -- Guardian of Deceit
Guardian of Deceit by William H. Coles is a story about a boy, Darwin, who loses his parents in a car accident at a young age, lives with an aunt until she becomes ill, and then moves in with his cousin Luther, who is a pro athlete living in a mansion in New York. Darwin was left well provided for by his parents when they died and received a monthly allowance. Darwin anticipates that he will not have to worry about anything living with Luther, but arrives to be given a small storage room to live in and his allowance stopped. Luther believes that he should have to earn his money and not be given everything he wants. Darwin soon makes new friends in the household staff and Granny. Darwin meets Dr. Malverne on the plane going to New York and discovers that he is a neighbor. Dr. Malverne takes Darwin under his wing and mentors him. Luther later marries a pop star by the name of Sweeny Pale who befriends Darwin. All Darwin wants in life is his own money and has a dream of becoming a doctor. Even with his new friends, he doesn’t know if he can overcome the obstacles with Luther.
There is a lot of action in this book due to Luther being abusive, addicted to drugs, and his gambling problem. He owes millions of dollars to people who are willing to kill for it. Multiple times Darwin is put into danger because of Luther’s activities. The men in the story are the type who believe women are subservient and there is a lot of sexual harassment throughout. Mystery surrounds the disappearance and murder of the daughter of one of the household staff.
With Luther’s lifestyle and as Darwin grows into adulthood, there are many sex scenes in this book. However, they are low keyed and not exotic in nature. There is some mild profanity throughout the book but nothing really offensive. For example, at the beginning of Chapter 3, Luther states, “I’m the guardian, for Christ’s sake.” I would recommend this book for anyone who likes a good romance with lots of mystery.
I liked how the story flowed from one chapter to the next. The connection between events was clear and concise. My interest was caught in the first two chapters and I was anxious to find out what happened next. The main thing I disliked about the book was that it did not have page numbers, location numbers, nor percentages to track where you were in the book.
I rank this book 4 out of 4 stars because it was well-written and professionally edited. I did not find any grammatical or typographical errors.
