Review by Martina A J -- We are Voulhire: The Fires of V...
We are Voulhire: The Fires of Virko by Matthew Tysz is the second book in the We are Voulhire series and kicks off with the same pace with which the first book ended. This part is not a standalone book and does not provide a recap of the first book, so read the first one if you haven't yet.
Meldorath is back in Castle Hillport, pondering on the next steps of his plan. However, the main action takes place in Virko, an industrial town and Voulhire's main capitalistic success story. Galen and his friends are on the way to Virko, seeking iron for his blacksmith business. The much-loved and ailing sovereign of Virko, Lord Venden Hrelek is attempting to transfer his power to a council of merchants and away from his only son. His son, the quiet and retiring Hans Hrelek, publicly accepts this move graciously. But what is the reason for his father’s unaffectionate decision?
This book has some similarities to the first book - smooth transitions among multiple POV characters, allies with very different agendas, gruesome murders and brilliant villains with complicated characters and mysterious motivations. And while we are talking about complicated villains let me just add this: literal demons from hell are less scary compared to the charming and brilliant psychopath now manipulating events in Virko.
I have no negatives to point out. Honestly, I was too engrossed by the action to notice anything else. The plot moves quickly and relentlessly. I loved the detailing of the characters and their backstories. It is astonishing how much we learn about each character considering the small size of the book. I loved the main protagonists, hated the creepy characters and felt conflicted by the complexity of the antagonists. What else can you expect from a book?
I am giving this book 4 out of 4 stars. The first book was interesting, but this book makes it impossible to stop reading this series. However, this series is not for the faint of heart or anyone squeamish about gore and body mutilation. It is definitely not suitable for children and adolescents. I read most of the second half in a kind of fascinated horror, terrified of what was coming next but unable to stop. I fervently hope the series ending is going to be worth it. The editing is professional. But I think it is time to start thinking about print editions and interesting covers. Overall, I would definitely recommend this series to fantasy fans who don't mind gore and a bit of profanity.
