We are Voulhire: The Fires of Virko by Matthew Tysz is the second book in the We Are Voulhire series. The book follows Galen’s journey. In the first book (We Are Voulhire: A New Arrival Under Great Skies) he was a refugee from a war-torn land and had inherited in the land of Voulhire when his uncle died.

Galen finds himself in Virko which he describes as the heart of the Voulhirian industry. Galen and his companions agree to help out lord Venden; he urges them to rescue his son from the darkness. He tells them about a demon that has been bound by lord Vendens’ son, Folcro. Galen and his companions believe that Folcro will use this demon for some play for power. Therefore, they visit a church so the priests can banish the dangerous weapon, before it is too late.

Every chapter in the book is a different perspective. The writing is smooth which makes it easy to follow the storyline. The different perspectives can sometimes be confusing. However, because of the great writing technique by Tysz, it is not a big issue.

What I liked most about the book was Galen’s character. His chapters were always the ones I looked forward to read. Galen’s perspectives were in a first-person narrative and the other perspectives mostly in third. For me, I enjoyed the first person style more, as you can get inside the characters head. This may have helped in forming a closer attachment to Galen’s character. I did not dislike much in the book except all the perspective changes. Furthermore, I understand that this is part of the book; in order for the author to bring to life everything that is happening around the main character.

I recommend this book to those who enjoy a well-written fantasy novel. The book seems to be coherent as a stand-alone novel only with the summary of the first book. Even if you haven't read the previous book, you'll have no problem understanding this novel. However, I do not recommend this as you may miss important details in the first book. So, if you want to give this series a read, then start from the first book to appreciate a wonderful series. I would not recommend this book to the younger audience due to profanity and violence.

The rating I would give this book is four out of four stars. It was written and edited well; I did not come across any major mistakes which could have made the rating lower.
