Official Review: Whispers in the Dark by S.N.M Jones
Whispers in the Dark by S. N. M. Jones is a thriller that follows a group of women whose lives have been filled with tragedies. Even after all their hardships, these women try their best to survive and make the best of their situations. Sadly, there is a dark, unknown danger patiently waiting for them. Will they be able to make it through?
My favorite aspect of this thriller was how real it seemed. Based on the author’s description of the book, I thought there was going to be a lot more supernatural events, but those events are actually extremely minimal. The vast majority of the book is so realistic, it’s frightening. This is the type of book that will make you scared of leaving your house by yourself because you know the tragedies faced by the characters can happen to any of us.
The pace is just right, it’s neither fast nor slow. Meanwhile, my heartbeat was pretty fast through the majority of the book thanks to the suspense the author manages to keep throughout the story.
The novel follows several female characters as their lives take an unexpected turn for the worst. When I first noticed there were going to be several characters, I was worried I would be unable to remember each character’s story or that some stories would be a bit boring or repetitive. Thankfully, I could not have been more wrong. Each character’s story is well created and different from the rest, making it very easy to follow along. Not only that but the author manages to make the reader sympathize, cheer, and care for every single one of the female characters.
The only thing I disliked about the book was that the Spanish dialogue contained a lot of errors. As a fluent Spanish speaker, I would cringe every time I had to read anything in Spanish. Nonetheless, the Spanish dialogue is only a small portion of the novel, and it will not bother non-Spanish speakers in any way.
I recommend this book to anyone who loves thrillers. I just want to warn readers that this novel contains many detailed descriptions of violence, both physical and sexual. There is also a decent amount of profanity. Therefore, I would not recommend this book to young teens.
I rate this thriller 3 out of 4 stars due to the number of grammatical errors I found. If it wasn’t for the errors, I would gladly give the book 4 stars. Every aspect of the book was well thought out by the author.
