Review by luvballads -- How To Be Successful
Everyone wants to get there, but very few actually make their way to the destination. Whether we like to admit it or not, the vague, traditional idea of success, is something we all would like to achieve at some point in our lives. However, we must also not forget the small successes we are able to accomplish in our daily lives.
In How to Be Successful by author M. Curtis McCoy, he adds his two cents into the age old discussion of what it means to be successful. McCoy himself is the CEO of tech company Best Cellular but throughout the book he makes mention of his adventures from struggling with a myriad of health issues, such as being diagnosed with Type-1 Diabetes, overcoming a brain tumour, and eventually becoming a serial entrepreneur. While he has achieved financial success, the book more so dives into the waters of self-development and the miniscule successes that most people generally do not pay attention to; successes that can be achieved on a daily basis, such as doing the dishes. In addition, he invites a number of people whom he considers successful and each of them share lovely anecdotes of their own definition of “success”.
The book itself is written in a casual manner, almost as if it was a friend giving you advice. Not at all a difficult read, anybody who has passed the 7th grade would have no trouble absorbing the wisdom and experience McCoy has to share. I did not notice any typos or spelling errors in this book, therefore I think it was professionally edited.
There are a few moments throughout that are considered cliché, but this is to be expected with any self-help or business book. So if you are not a fan of overused, repetitive, inspiring sayings, I would not recommend you pick up this book. Personally, I enjoyed how their idea of success isn’t limited by their financial status, but they also take into consideration the level of success within their relationships, their hobbies, and their overall wellbeing. As a business student, I am more than happy to learn from those who have lived the life I aspire to live. If you’re another human being that would like to appreciate the small successes in life and want to thrive in entrepreneurship, or simply want to learn from others like I do, then this is definitely a good recommended read.
All in all, I’d give this book 3/4 stars. Mostly because its content is enlightening and I absolutely love that this book not only contained his opinion on what it means to be successful but the fact that he added the opinions of others as well. However, the concepts explored in the book are nothing particularly brand new, if you read business related books often, you would probably see the same things being said over and over again. Despite the repetition, it does not take away from its value. I hope that others who read this book can also start to redefine their outlooks on success.
