Agreed. Some people just like being around other people, seeing where things go, enjoying the company and taking things as they come and go. I absolutely agree that it’s rare to find a suitable partner as soon as you become remotely open to the idea. And just because each relationship may not add a deeper dimension to his character and make his life permanently better in some obvious way, per se, it certainly doesn’t mean that the experiences didn’t offer him subtle insights that influenced other aspects of his life.Muvokav wrote: ↑05 Nov 2020, 07:37 I agree with this, but I don't think he went into those relationships to "bring out the best in him". I also understand that even in real life not everyone finds "the one" on one try , so I can not fault him for this. Ron's numerous relationships did not make me enjoy the book any less.

The thing that didn't really resonate with me, was that all the women mentioned ended up wanting a relationship of sorts with him. This didn't really strike me as normal, since most people don't tend to be attracted to everyone they meet. I also never got the feeling that Ron was particularly into any of these women until they made their move. It felt more as if he just kinda went along with it.

Wow! This is a really interesting take on the story! I hadn’t previously realized that all of the relationships were initiated by the women, although I totally see it now. I think you’re right the Ron pretty much just goes with the flow of life and doesn’t have that much direction.Marty_Kelly wrote: ↑04 Nov 2020, 05:58 I think the many relationships, in a way, contributes to Ron's character because all those relationships were initiated by the ladies. This reflects to some extent his lack of control/direction/focus in many aspects of his life.

I have to disagree that the relationships didn’t bring any growth. I think each new relationship taught him something and helped him eventually figure out how to live alone. I think the best example of this is Cheryl, because Leet tells us that long after Cheryl, Ron still appreciated her lessons on the earth and feeling connected to it and that he would frequently take walks like he did with her.Arimart99 wrote: ↑04 Nov 2020, 21:12 I usually don't like it when a character has multiple relationships, especially when they bring no character growth, which is the case in this book, so it's no surprise that I didn't like it. However, I understand that having relationships is a natural thing in real-life, so why not bring it into a book too?

I completely agree with this! In fact, I have mentioned somewhere in my review that how Ron does not really initiate anything of importance in his life (except chess). I would've liked for him to show some interest of his own at least towards the end of the book if not through the book. Everything of significance that he does, he is lead by someone else into it.Marty_Kelly wrote: ↑04 Nov 2020, 05:58 I think the many relationships, in a way, contributes to Ron's character because all those relationships were initiated by the ladies.
