The author Tayma Tameen presents us Seeker 5, a book about a girl, Skylar Caellum, that lives in Block F, in a society lead by the United Survivor Republic. In this society only a privileged 5% of the population gets access to the commodities of modern life, while the rest live in poverty with little amount of food to survive. Skylar lives with her mom and younger bother, his father passed away working for the brigade, and her older brother tragically died at the trials. The trials consist of a series of stages where they test the intelligence, the psychological and physical strength of the participants, and only the people who are well prepared can apply. Skylar wants to join the trials and succeed, so her family can become part of the privileged 5% of the society and live a comfortable life.

My rating for this book is 2 out of 4 stars, because even though I did not enjoy it a 100%, it was not a terrible book to read; it was easy to follow, and despite a few typos and grammar mistakes, the book was well edited and organized. Besides, I feel like teenagers will probably like this kind of dystopian universe, as it was proven with multiple other books.

What I liked the most in Seeker 5 was that we can see beautiful friendships and camaraderie among the participants of the trials, and how they play a big part in the characters actions and decisions. Various events of the trials were very well thought and surprising, and some aspects of them can be relatable in the circumstances we are currently living around the world.

However, this feels like a combination of some of the most famous YA books put into one, trying to make it feel like a different story because it does not have the “typical” action scenes descriptions, and it is more focused on the psychological impact the events have in the characters, and their inner struggles. Yet, in my opinion, it does not change the fact that the story is pretty similar with only some original twists.

What I liked least was that it lacked a good explanation on how this Republic came to be, we know nothing of what happened before this, only that there was a war. Furthermore, we get very few details about the figures of authority in the USR, which does not help the reader get an idea of what kind of place it is the characters are living in. Moreover, various of the conflicts and events that occurred had a very underwhelming resolution, and were very predictable.
