Wow, this sounds like a right rollercoaster. Romance mixed with historical fiction is right up my alley, and the excellent editing is a plus. (I don't really mind the accent-switching.) Thanks for the review!

I like what you said about Lily being a prodigy. The time frame for this book indicates that slaves were not treated well; instead, they were abused. I am curious to find out what happens to Lily and how her friendship with James blossoms. Congrats to the author on BOTD! :)

Historical romance isn't really my thing, but this book seems like it'll be worth a read.

I think I smell forbidden romance in the novel. I love that. Also, the title is intriguing. Congrats on being the BOTD.

Wow! The review lowered the rating mainly because of "not consistent accent" of the characters. Must have been quite confusing. But still the book is enjoyable. Then, it must be really good in capturing and holding the reader .
" A little betrayed when it ended". This seems to me that the story would leave the reader either wanting for more or hanging. Or perhaps, both.
The word punishment is intriguing as used and the review cleverly left out the clarification making it more thought provoking.
A very honest and still enticing review. I am ready to disagree with the reviewer with the rating he/she has given.

Being born and reared in the deep south myself, I frankly found the 'dialect' used in the book ludicrous. Although I'm aware it's one that is (over)used in many novels set in southern history, I find that it's not accurate. Yes, we sometimes drop the 'g' off of 'ing' words when we're not paying attention, etc. But the way it is (over)emphasized and written in books just gets under my skin. Lily, for instance, having been basically raised in a plantation owner's home, would almost certainly not use dialect such as "Massa" and "Naw sa," and James and his brothers, having been raised by a gentlewoman, most certainly would not. I noticed the back and forth between 'slang' speech and proper speech. It was as if the author couldn't quite decide which was correct. I don't think I could stomach reading an entire book full of this, no matter how good the plot. I'll be skipping this one. Thanks for the honest review!

This book follows the story of Lily from when she's taken away from her mother to how she plays the piano and befriends James. I wonder what happens to Lily when James discovers her talent.
