Official Review: Dutchess the Cat With Thumbs by Rue
Dutchess the Cat With Thumbs by Rue was different than other children's books I have read. I love children's books with animals and have a penchant for picking them up. That said, I have not read any books about polydactyl cats! For those who don't know, polydactyl cats have extra toes on their feet, just like Duchess. This is great for Duchess as she can do more than other cats. Open this book to learn all the things she can do with her extra toes.
From all appearances, the author wanted to teach readers about polydactyl cats and introduce the main character - Duchess. I think the author did very well at sharing what they wanted. The author was able to discuss this in a way that was understandable by children. My favorite part was the last few pages, so I can't share all the details with you. That said, I was excited to learn something from a kid's book that I didn't already know!
On the other hand, there were a few grammatical errors in the book. As it is a picture book with limited text, I generally expect there to be only one or two errors at most. While this book appears to be edited professionally, there were a handful of errors that I noticed. As such, this would be my least favorite part of the book.
I also didn't quite like that there was not much of a story or adventure. Of course, every book is different. However, I found myself wishing for more and looking for a conclusion at the end of the book.
Overall, given the above and my general enjoyment of the book, I have to give this book 3 out of 4 stars. If the author fixes the grammatical errors found, I think this book could earn all four stars.
At this time, I think many people would enjoy this book. Specifically, I would recommend it to elementary-aged children and parents. Kids who love animal characters would also like the book.
