We are Voulhire: The Ascension of Akistry by Matthew Tysz is a one-of-a-kind combination of science-fiction and fantasy about a young man named Galen Bray, although the events revolve specifically around a heightened rivalry between Meldorath and Akistry. It’s also the fifth book of the We are Voulhire series.

Virko has found its way to prosperity after being freed from the demonic infestation, but the danger was still overhanging on Voulhire. Adopting his Voulhirian identity and dismissing that of a refugee, Galen was determined to protect his new country from falling into the chaos that had plagued his homeland. In order to do that, he had to come up with a plan to depose Meldorath from his position as eiodi. As reluctant as Demetrius was, helping a friend in need remained a must. Consequently, he ends up leading Galen and Rowan on an adventure in the Dire Vine Jungle, knowing fully well that if anyone could help them defeat the prodigious mage, it can only be the renowned prophet Akistry.

So far in the series, I think this book had the most unexpected turn of events. As a reader, you’d think that after reading four books, you would have already established a tangible image of each of the main characters, until you realize that you didn’t. As a result of that unpredictability, I fell head over heels for this book. Also, the constant switch between characters story-wise was less random than the previous books.

Sarcasm-wise, the characters never disappoint as usual. I really liked that Galen has finally caught up on his friends’ level of sarcasm. It made the story more enjoyable and more intriguing. Romance-wise though, I may say that, as faint as it was, I am a little bit disappointed to see it dispelled as soon as it started, even though I know that romance is not one of this book’s main themes.

In light of the above, and considering how I stumbled upon very few typos/errors, which leads me to believe that this book was professionally edited, I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. I wish I could give it more stars because it’s definitely worth it. I’d like to point out that this book contains mature sexual depictions and non-borderline profanity, so I deem it to be only appropriate for an adult audience who’s comfortable with the such, specifically one who would love to dive into a fantastic realm like no other.

A word to the wise, this book does not fulfill the role of a standalone. Therefore, I highly suggest reading the previous four books before checking this one out.

I guess Rowan's tomfoolery finally rubs off on Galen per his wish :D. Since book #3 where he exposed part of his past to his friends, it seems Galen has been adapting to his new life.

Thank you! One thing that scares me about Tysz's unexpectedness is the sudden death of characters. you can never tell who will be next, and you start panicking and worrying whether you'll lose one of your favorites. For a long time, I was even worried for Demi and Rowan lol

This story: “We are Voulhire,” seems to attract little more-than-expected fans of fiction. I intend to read the entire series soon.

Thank you! Indeed a lot of things will happen after the first book, and personality-wise, a lot of changes will take place concerning our three main characters, but only for the better.

Indeed you are right! haha

I wish I could know more about Galen's past though. It's very intriguing that someone who seems so simple-minded and almost naive has managed to survive the civil war in the Lands of The Princes for so long. I know the book has explained why he is like that, but it's not enough for me as I want to know in detail all that he's so eager to forget lol.

And it's definitely worth all that attention! If you're into fantasy and sci-fi, I can assure you that you will enjoy it too.

Yeah, unfortunately, this series doesn't provide much of the characters' backgrounds. It seems book #5 would give us another glimpse of Galen's past, but that's not really satisfactory either.

Since there will eventually be 9 books in this series, let's hope that Tysz won't leave us in the dark when it comes to Galen's past in the upcoming books.
