High Flying by Kaylin McFarren is a combination of mystery, love, and a bit of the impossible. The story will make you question some of your own life decisions with hope thrown in to overcome your own demons.

Skyler Haines is a troubled teenager with personal demons that have haunted her since she was a child. She lives with a heartless grandfather, is dealing with the death of both parents, and trying to navigate high school. Skyler has always loved the skies and becomes a stunt pilot as she finds and heals herself. Skyler is performing at an airshow and encounters a storm and another plane. The pilot of the mystery plane guides her to a safe landing - 20 years in the past. Skyler realizes that the mystery man who saved her life is her young father. Her father died before she was born. As the realization dawns that she is in the past, she goes on a mission to help her family and possibly change the future. As the story moves along at a fast pace, Skyler finds herself in imminent danger at every turn. She questions changing the future and does wonder if it would change her life. Skyler makes peace with her father, comes to understand her mother, and returns to her own time.

I enjoyed the story and the mystery that surrounded the characters. Skyler grabbed my heart with her unusual career. I related to Skyler and the pain she felt as a teenager and then again as an adult. I felt her desire to work through the issues and resolve what she could. Skyler also figured out that some things just cannot be resolved.

I also enjoyed the subplot of her boyfriend, Jake, and his caretaker Ethan. Without using spoilers, it was an interesting underlying story along with the other characters.

I did have a hard time keeping up with who the bad guys were. At times it felt like the action was going too fast to keep up. I kept getting confused between who the actual police officers were and who the bad guys were. I think just a little more clarity with who was who would have helped. I found a couple of errors that were minor but a bit distracting.

Overall I loved Skyler and her issues. She overcomes a tremendous amount for one person and still finds true love. The time warp and the mystery all made for a fun weekend read.

I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. I found three errors and felt the clarity on a few of the characters could have been a bit clearer. I did thoroughly enjoy the book and will be reading Kaylin McFarren again.

I would recommend this to audiences that are not triggered by harsh language and or mental health issues. McFarren does add an author note at the beginning of the book, warning of harsh language and mental health issues. The warning was appreciated.
