The finesser by Patrice Shavone Brown is a fictional novel that is centred on the life of two main characters; Passion and Jody. Passion is a comfortable self-made successful woman in her late 30’s who owns a tow and trucking company called PassioNate Auto Movers which is the fourth largest in her city. While Jody is a deadbeat single dad with a dark criminal past, which made him turn out to be a conman who thinks he can take advantage of Passion’s generosity towards him. What he does not know is that Passion is not a woman to be manipulated as she has her hoodoo to help her get whatever she wants.

In the book description, the author said something about Passion trying to make Jody marry her in order to force him to pay her back. But while reading the book, I noticed that in actual fact, Passion never did that. Rather, it was Jody who brought up the idea of marriage by proposing to Passion. This error needs to be corrected to avoid confusing the readers.

What I loved most about this book was the storyline and how each chapter of this book was divided into two headings: one for Passion, and one for Jody. This writing style helped me know what was going through the mind of each of the main characters at each point in the novel and this helped me understand the characters more. The author used street slangs in the book which made the book more realistic and also helped to throw more light on the background of the characters.

What I disliked most about this book were the errors present and because of that, I will rate this book 3 out of 4 stars because, the errors in the book were more than ten. There was an instance where the date 31st of November was used and we all know that November has only 30 days. The grammatical blunders in this book were very distracting as they caused ridges while reading the book. Without the errors, this book would have been perfect.

There were some erotic scenes in this book and some instances of profanity too. Therefore, I will not recommend this book to younger audiences. People who hate hoodoo and everything about it might also want to avoid reading this book although, the writer only mentioned its use a few times. If you enjoy reading stories about women getting their own back, then this book is definitely for you!

The finesser has a second part which I really look forward to reading.
