Review by iammiape -- Awakening by Tayma Tameem
From Amara’s birth, the blessing of Brikkir, the Spirit of Winter, has been bestowed upon her. By this, she is capable of conjuring ice. At a young age, Amara faces difficulties in controlling her irritation. Her emotion invokes her power, so when she reacts out of passionate anger, it results to ruin. Katja, her older sister, is different. Although she has no power, she is warm and sympathetic, especially to Amara. When Amara was around eight years old, she killed her loyal stallion in her fury. It petrified all witnesses, and some perceived her like a beast. When Amara’s doings become more daunting, will Katja remain faithful to her? Or will she concede to what people regard her sister as? From Amara’s birth, it was spoken that she is destined for greatness. Only time could tell if it will become a blessing for the people or a reason for their doom.
The chapters are alternately set in the present and past; even so, the story's flow is clear to understand. The author had explicitly shown the events that nurtured Amara to be a malicious Ice Queen, which also enlightened me to the bond she shared with her sister, Katja, when they were together. The profound love that both sisters share was explicitly presented. Other characters also have stories to reveal, which brought me to a different perception of them and a deeper understanding of their characters. The progress of the story was composed thoughtfully because the revelations validated the outcomes. The significant characters didn't arrive where they are overnight. Something occurred that brought them to their circumstances. Although the general nature of the story is fictional, the reactions of the characters are practical. Apart from the turmoil and drama this book contained, it also involved a flourishing romance. This book is filled with passionate individuals, which some have either unforeseen or projected motives. Lastly, I have not encountered grammatical errors and typographical errors.
I encountered one character whose exact intention had me confused. From one point of view, it appeared to be scheming an evil plan for its benefit. However, in its other following point of view, it seemed to be that its intention is for good. I had hoped that it was clarified if its motive is good or bad.
I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. I rated it four and not three because the succession of events was creative, and I enjoyed reading the story until the last chapter. Although I have confusion in one character, it didn't completely disrupt the story's flow since I encountered it near the ending.
This book holds different kinds of lust: lust for power, lust for attention, and lust for revenge. However, this book also presents the influence of love, which will always be more outstanding despite all these evil. If you wanted to meet all of these in one book, then Awakening by Tayma Tameem is for you.
