Review by suefrey -- The Senator's Suitcase by Mitch Engel
Most people would be devastated by the sudden loss of their mother in a tragic accident. Troy Davenport was not sure how to feel. As the son of a United States Senator, he often felt like he did not know the woman who was glorified by so many other people. Upon her death, he began a journey to find out who his mother was. Everyone he spoke to had stories of the wonderful things Senator Davenport did for them. Along the way, he learned how complicated family relationships can be, and how love can find us in the most unexpected places.
The Senator’s Suitcase by Mitch Engel is an enjoyable story which begins as a suspenseful quest to unravel the mystery of the contents of a suitcase hidden for years in a storage locker. Along the way, Troy Davenport learns why the mother, who rarely showed any affection, was so loved by so many. The story touches on so many topics, including family relationships, inheritance, wealth, homosexuality, sexual abuse, and finding true love. It explores how our past forms us and plays a role in the decisions we make that direct our lives.
I rate this book 4 out of 4 and recommend it to anyone who enjoys a good suspenseful romance. The end of each chapter left you wondering what was going to happen next. Mitch Engel’s writing lets you feel the emotions that Troy Davenport feels with each new discovery about his mother’s life. The only part of the book I disliked was that Troy did not learn about Cal’s secret. I think it would have been an interesting twist in their relationship.
The characters in the book are one of the things that I enjoyed the most. The author dove into the past of each character, creating a complete picture of the complex characters and what led certain characters to make decisions that steered the path of their lives. The change in societal norms that Beth grew up with were influential in her lifelong goals as a Senator to change public policy.
A few grammatical errors were noted in the book, but overall, it was edited well. There are some sexual scenes, but not too graphic. Scenes of child sexual abuse may be disturbing to some readers but are necessary to explain the personalities of the characters, and how abuse can affect not only the person being abused, but the generations that follow.
