The Accidental Road is a historical fiction book by Jodi Lea Stewart. The story is set in the1950s. Katherine is a 16-year-old girl who loves reading books and watching films. Roy is Katherine’s stepfather. She doesn’t love him because he is abusive towards her mother. Not being able to take his abuse anymore, Katherine and her mother decide to run away. Their plan is to start a new life in Las Vegas. However, this doesn’t go to plan. Katherine and her mother find themselves stranded in Arizona with a broken car. Will Roy catch up to them? To make matters worse, Katherine notices that two men are stalking them. Who are they? And what do they want? This book takes readers on a crazy journey.

I enjoyed reading every aspect of this book. All the characters were fun and unique and developed really well. Katherine is a sweet, kind-hearted girl who is mature for her age. She stresses about the small things, and this stops her from enjoying life to the fullest. I loved seeing her gradually come out of her shell throughout the book. I definitely could relate to Katherine a lot in the book. She taught me to live in the moment and to not take anything for granted.

Furthermore, one of my favourite things about the book was seeing the relationship between Katherine and her mother. They have an unbreakable bond. No matter what happened, they were always there for each other. There’s so much female empowerment in this book; it was inspiring to read.

I really liked the author’s writing style in the book. It was easy to read and understand. The story is told from Katherine’s point of view. This is great because I was able to understand her thoughts and feelings. I love that the book didn’t feel serious, even though it mentions serious things like drugs and the mafia. It’s a mixture of fun and adventure; you won’t get bored reading it. The added mystery of the two men had me turning the pages.

There are some important lessons that can be learnt from this book. For example, the idea that a home is where your family and friends are. Also, it teaches the idea that it’s important to learn from our mistakes and move forward instead of dwelling on them.

There was nothing that I disliked about the book. The only problem I found was that at the start of the book Roy referred to Katherine as ‘sis’. At first, I thought this was a typo, but then he calls her sis again later in the book. I think the author should have explained the reason for this because it confused me.

Overall, I would rate this book 4 out of 4 stars because it was an incredible book. I had so much fun reading it, and I can’t wait to read more from the author. The book was professionally edited because I found no mistakes. I recommend this book to young adults who enjoy reading adventure books that contain a mystery.

Wow. I loved the storyline of this book. Katherine and her mother must have been really brave. I also agree that there is a lot of lessons to be learnt from this book, like; no matter the type of relationship you have with someone, take a bold step to leave or it will only get worse. Thanks for your honest review.
