Review by mschauwecker3] -- Strong Heart by Charlie Sheldon
Strong Heart is an amazing story about a troubled young girl who has been passed around to different family members after her mother's death. When she finally meets her grandfather, he takes her on an unexpected adventure through the Pacific Northwest: a land of legends. Together, they discover the magic of their native history and a strong family bond. Sarah experiences a life-changing event and learns what life was like during the ice age. When her companions are placed in danger over a land dispute, she carries her knowledge into her modern-day journey to save their lives. Sarah is a beautiful example of an unconquerable human spirit.
This book shows how the love of ancestry, nature, and history can affect everyone it touches. Sarah’s experiences are presented through great storytelling, beautiful scenic descriptions, and emotional character development. Charlie Sheldon creates an unbelievable story in such a convincing way, the reader believes in the magic of the mountains as strongly as the characters. Throughout the book, there is a dispute between a local tribe's rights and a company’s mining project. This is a realistic element that may touch readers on a deep level.
There is very little that I can say negatively about this book. The conflict involving the mining company may not be the most appealing part for all readers, but it was essential to the story and was presented effectively. This book is truly a joy to read and takes the reader on a fantastic journey.
Strong Heart deserves 4 out of 4 stars for its powerful storytelling and unique adventure. The writing is professional, nearly error-free, and pieced together with a perfect blend of scenery, action, and relationships between the characters. Sarah's individual adventure is worthy of its own book. It introduces a new world filled with danger and excitement.
This book would appeal to a wide range of audiences. The main characters represent three generations, providing each reader someone with whom they can identify. Anyone that feels a connection to the mountains or camping will appreciate the majesty one encounters on a trip deep into the backcountry. There is also a scientific element involving the roots of human presence in the area, dating back thousands of years. Readers drawn to the eternal debate between beliefs and data will enjoy the characters' views on the subject. Fans of adventure, history, archaeology, native culture, and the mystery of ancient spirits would appreciate this book.
