Police Pranks, Jokes and Other Stories not Suitable for Children by Buz Williams is a book filled with nearly one hundred short stories from the careers of police officers, primarily from Buz’s own experiences. With his father and both grandfathers as former police officers, Buz had heard plenty of practical jokes growing up, some of which are included here. From Buz’s father and grandfather’s days to Buz’s retirement, these stories cover just about every humorous situation a police officer might encounter or create.

My favorite part about the book was reading the stories about pranks the police officers pulled on each other. I found the camaraderie between them engaging, and the nature of the stories made this book an interesting read. I also appreciated that the short stories made it easy to find a good stopping place. Buz was an interesting person to read about with his mischievousness and ability to find a joke in almost any situation, and this book helped show some of the funnier parts in the life of a police officer.

What I liked the least about the book was the large number of pranks or jokes involving sexual content. I did expect some of these types of stories based on the title but not as many as there were. That said, it is understandable that given Buz had to work in areas that had problems with public indecency many humorous situations happened in these scenarios. As Buz says in his disclaimer, “The language and situations used herein, reflect the humor that develops when in constant contact with crooks, ne’er do wellers,…and others, who inhabit the nether regions of today’s communities.”

I would recommend this book to people who are looking for a light, entertaining read and who are okay with strong language, such as the f-word, and sexual references. As the book is a compilation of short stories, it is perfect for those who have limited time for reading. Although many of the stories would be acceptable for younger readers, I would not recommend the book as a whole to them due to the previously mentioned language and sexual content.

The book was an entertaining read covering the more humorous bits in the life of a police officer. For the content, I would give the book 4 stars; however, there were numerous typos and errors. For these reasons, I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars.
