What’s Your Favorite Color? by Amber L. Lassiter tells the story of little Amber, who finds it challenging to keep her favorite color a secret. On this special day, the children had to wear clothes that represented their favorite color. The many easels and crocheted berets in the classroom filled the kids with excitement. Mrs. Lassiter (their teacher) instructed them to paint a picture using their favorite color at least once, but they could only reveal their favorite color at the end. Unfortunately, Amber forgot her paint at home, and she desperately turns to her friends for help. How can she borrow paint from her friends without revealing her secret?

This book is without a doubt a feast for the eyes. At first glance, readers will notice the striking colors on every page, and the vivid illustrations portray the story perfectly. The text will be challenging for young readers in the best possible way. Ages 7-9 will find reading this book rewarding as it will expand their vocabulary significantly. Younger readers can also enjoy listening to this story as parents and teachers can explain the bigger words along the way. I also have to add that I enjoyed the ending a great deal. The big reveal is a surprise that readers will have to find out for themselves.

The author includes various questions throughout the story that will engage readers and encourage discussions. Readers have to examine facial expressions and body language in the text and the illustrations. They have to identify the emotions and also discuss why the characters express these behaviors or emotions. Here is an example of one of the questions: "Describe how Amber felt when she couldn't find her favorite color. What clues helped you to describe how Amber felt?" (p.19). This is more than just an entertaining children’s book. It also promotes emotional development and thinking and reasoning skills.

I was trying to think of something to dislike about this story but came up empty-handed. I only found two errors, so the book comes across as professionally edited. This delightful story deserves a 4 out of 4 stars rating.

Reading this book brought back lovely school memories of my own, and I’m sure young readers will have fun with this one. I’d recommend this book for Grade 1-3 learners as a bit of a challenging read, but worth the effort. It is an engaging book, and I encourage parents and teachers to pick it up.

It sounds as if John Ruskin was a man of great importance and influence. Taking a deep dive into his life and learning about the art world during his time would be interesting. Thanks for the insightful review!
