Review by Tarilan -- What's Your Favorite Color?
What would you do if you forgot to bring your watercolors to school and yet your teacher has a painting task for the day? Well, I would personally borrow some from my friends. What's Your Favorite Color? by Amber L Lassiter is a story about a girl who wants to finish up her painting even though she left her watercolors at home.
The story unfolds as the children prepare for their art class. Their teacher, Mrs. Lassiter, had asked them to include their favorite color in the attire they wore to school. Additionally, they had to make a painting using the same color. However, they were supposed to keep it a secret. No one in class was supposed to know the other person's favorite color until the paintings were revealed. Amber forgot to bring her watercolors to school. She then decided to borrow some from her friends to finish her task in time. What is her favorite color? Will she keep it a secret?
This is not just a story book. It is entertaining as well as educating. The author uses a descriptive language and some intricate similes. Later, she asks questions about them to see if the children know what they mean. A work space is also provided for answering all these thought-provoking questions. She even asks how the reader arrives at the conclusion. I love the way how the author elicits critical thinking and conflict resolution. What I loved most was the aspect of mixing colors. I believe that children should know how some of these colors come about.
Amber was the perfect protagonist for this book. She had a different line of thinking as compared to her classmates. Meanwhile, the illustrations were great. They would show all kinds of emotions from frustration to excitement and confusion. The splash of colors used in the background was beautiful. As a person who loves art and color, I found this to be very creative. Therefore, I commend the author for a job well done.
There is nothing I disliked about the book. It was well-written with two minor errors that didn't disturb my reading. I neither encountered profanity nor sensual content. I rate the book 4 out of 4 stars. Children between the age of 5 to 8 will love this book. They will learn how to think critically and also improve on their reading comprehension. Parents and teachers can also use this book to help their little ones study.
