We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies is a sci-fi/fantasy book authored by Matthew Tsyz. It narrates the stories of different characters and their lives in the kingdom of Voulhire. This is the first book in Matthew Tsyz’s We Are Voulhire series.

The story begins by narrating about the Land of the Princes. There was an Emperor who gave each of his four sons an island to rule. However, a terrible war waged among the islands as each Prince sought to gain sole power over all the islands. Galen is a young man who has lived his entire life in the Land of the Princes and, for twenty years, has known war and no peace. Galen receives news that his uncle is about to die and has left him his wealth in the city of Magnum Caelum, in Voulhire. With the help of his uncle’s wealth executor, Rowan, Galen sets to begin a new life in Magnum Caelum, away from the wars in the Lands of the Princes. How does Galen cope in this new and strange life?

In another city named Hillport, Edlus Alderman is appointed the new lord of Hillport by Voulhire's king, King Wilhelm. The appointment of Lord Eldus comes after the previous lord, Lord Orlin, is killed for his crimes against perversion of children. Lord Eldus sets out to do good and improve the lives of the people of Hillport. However, danger is around him as a powerful mage, Meldorath, and a terrorist group, Riva Rohavi, seek to do harm to Hillport and Lord Eldus. What is to become of Hillport and their new lord?

I could hardly find anything I disliked about the book as it is very captivating. However, it requires a great degree of patience and keenness to keep up with the book and how the plot develops. It can quickly throw the reader off the edge of the story if patience is not exercised. I enjoyed how the author uses an imaginative form of language to describe the details of the land and the mood of the characters. As I was reading the book, I could form in my mind’s eye the geographical descriptions of the kingdom of Voulhire with much ease. The author has a very creative twist in his narrations. Also, the author provides a reference guide at the end of the book that proves useful to understand the terms used.

The characters are well developed, though many. Thus, it would be important to keep track of them and how they weave into the story. I enjoyed Rowan’s character the most. He brought humor to the story with his sarcastic commentaries. However, I kept questioning why he went to great lengths as he did to help Galen. I hope to read the next books in the series to find out. The author also narrated Galen’s story in first person as opposed to third person in the rest of the story's characters. This made me feel more connected to Galen as opposed to the other characters. He draws sympathy to the reader as his life was quite difficult before his arrival to Magnum Caelum. The book also ends abruptly, making the reader yearn for more of the story.

I could hardly find any grammatical errors in the book. I conclude that it was professionally edited. There are no explicit sex scenes in the book, but some profane terms are used in the language. It is also worth noting that there are some graphic and gruesome descriptions of murder in the story, thus readers who may be sensitive to such narrations may be disturbed. Overall, I award the book 4 out of 4 stars. This is not a book to be missed by anyone who loves to read stories on magic and fantasy. Matthew Tsyz did a great job in We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies.
