I’m a fan of both historical fiction and military history, so I enjoy when these two subjects come together. I’ve not read a book that focuses on each war’s impact on a single family line, so I’m definitely intrigued.
There is no frigate like a book
To take us lands away,
Nor any coursers like a page
Of prancing poetry.
This traverse may the poorest take
Without oppress of toll;
How frugal is the chariot
That bears a human soul!

I feel sorry for the small people who are the most affected by wars, and the consequences are really devastating indeed. Historical fiction is hard to write, specially it requires a lot of research; and I appreciated the author to mention three different events in history. Your review was amazing anyway. Good job!

I think there are two aspects in the book that are worth noting. First is the fascinating family saga where the reader can just lay back and enjoy the story. The other is the historical fiction aspect where the reader can witness the horrors of war and flu epidemic, and I find this to be insightful and educational. This is a must-read for the fans of the genre. Thanks for the review.

Great work by John M. Millar, really interesting on how it sounds excellent, with a taste of history and war.

This has to be one of the saddest books I have ever read. The experience of war and post-war eras through different perspectives, it all helps to build a better understanding of what laypeople lived through. This novel is perfect for history buffs or for anyone who enjoys family mystery or drama. Congrats for BOTD.

A nice historical fiction book on wars with actual events and dates in history. I wonder how much stories Treat is hiding about his past life. Interesting review!

If we must understand in full measure the effect war has on a people, books like this one are highly recommended. I love the authors detailed approach to the work.

Great review.

I admire the author's style of writing. Writing a captivating historical fiction like this is not easy. I look forward to learning the effect of war on people's lives especially Paine's family here. Nice review.

Anyone who loves historical books would be entertained when the reader takes them through WWI, WWII and the Spanish flu epidemic. Treat's life seems like an interesting journey to follow.

I am not sure if I would like this kind of war narrative. I think it is very nice to see how war affects each individual, but the style and the overall look of this does not seem like my regular go to. Thanks for your review.

Stories that are hinged on any war will always be heartbreaking. There will always be losses amidst the victories that came with it. Great review. You gave a nice overview of what to expect on this. Keep it up.

A trip down memory lane would definitely include all the stuff he went through, also the insights into the bygone war. Worth reading and sharing.
