Abdi-ashirta can not be trusted, he is ambitious, and he has his own political agenda, but Hani and Lord Ptah-mes believe it is best to keep him in power. King Neb-ma’at-ra has brought prosperity and peace to the Two Lands. However, his health is failing, and Hani does not know what changes the King’s son, Nefer-khepru-ru’s rule, will bring if he dies. Hani goes to King Neb-ma’at’ra to discuss Abdi-ashirta and learns that the King wants Abdi-ashirta to continue in his current position. After the assassination of Abdi-ashirta, Lord Ptah-mes assigns Hani the task to travel to A’amu to investigate the murder. Nub-nefer, Hani’s wife, does not want him to go because she is scared of what will happen if the King dies and his son becomes the new King. With misgivings, Hani, along with his secretary, the dwarf Maya, leave for A’amu. Follow Hani and Maya on their journey. Will they be successful, or are they like birds in a snare trapped by political agendas? You will need to read Book 1 of The Lord Hani Mystery series, Bird in a Snare by N. L. Holmes, to find out.

There are multiple things I like about this book. Firstly, the author provides a map of the Egyptian Empire at the beginning of the book. This map helped me understand the distances that the characters had to travel. Secondly, the author provides historical notes and glossaries detailing the characters, the gods, Egyptian terms, and places that helped me understand the terminology and culture. Thirdly, the author’s descriptions of the characters allowed me to feel their fears, betrayal, love, and the heat of the desert sun. Finally, there are lessons to be learned in this book. One of my favorites was if you listen to your instinct, you will probably do the right thing.

There was nothing I disliked about this book. The book is action-packed and fast-paced with a smooth-flowing plot. I had a hard time putting the book down because I got so engrossed in the mystery and dangers in the story.

This book has been edited by a professional editor, as I only found one small error in this 425-page book. I gladly give this book 4 out of 4 stars due to the editing and my reading enjoyment.

I recommend this book to readers over the age of 18 who enjoy historical fiction. I will caution readers that the book does contain non-borderline profanity. If you are sensitive to that type of content, you may not want to read the book.
