I like the idea of Hilary and Charlie being at opposite ends of community center construction. Their conflict and character growth will be interesting to experience. The overall content seems well-written en plot compelling. It's also good to know that I can fall into this series without having read the previous installments. Thanks for the great review!

This sounds like a good book for young adults who are interested in basketball, and having a book dedicated to Gianna Bryant is interesting. Thanks for the review.

Above all, this fact that the author painted a societal picture using the characters in the book is what am curious about. I hope I will get a chance to read this book.

I've read a bit of this author's work in House of Dad's, and I loved it. I think I'll love this one too.
Thank you for this interesting review.

Author June Gillam concludes her newest Hillary Broome novel with this prophetic statement from Hillary, "I think we'll be surprised at how much we all find in 2020." She was correct. House of Hoops is set in Sacramento, California, in 2019. There are references to actual events and people, but the majority of the content is fiction. The book is dedicated to Gianna Bryant who died in January 2020. She and her legendary father, Kobe, are mentioned several times, but the accident that killed them both has not happened yet. References to mass shootings, protests, and Black Lives Matter are also included in this suspenseful story about the path to progress in a city environment.

The plot revolves around two protagonists who had an unpleasant incident in the past that is affecting their current situation. One of them is trying to build a community center; the other one is trying to stop the construction. The characters in this novel symbolize different social problems. Hillary, a strong woman, is determined to balance a career and a family. She has a supportive husband and a pre-teen daughter who echoes her mother's insecurities. Charlie, the second protagonist, is distraught over the gentrificaiton of his neighborhood. His concern has been hastened by a terminal illness diagnosis and his desire to leave a legacy before he dies. Readers see these individuals evolve and experience a catharsis. Stacy, another key character, remains a constant guiding force and is my favorite cast member in this social drama.

Kind of eerie that this book would mention Kobe Bryant and his daughter before the helicopter accident occurred. This book focuses on two different social problems. An interesting read and an excellent official review.

Your review was so well done and gave so much useful information, to help us decide if we should consider reading this book or not. I read the sample pages, but was not super excited to finish, nor read on. But after reading your review, I may have to change my mind.
Great job!!

Gillam is clearly a talented author as evidenced by the strong characters, well thought through storyline, and excellent use of literary devices. This social drama sounds like a gripping one. Thanks for the great review!

A beautiful novel indeed based on recent events including the mass shootings that's become a common occurrence in America. It's both an entertaining and yet an educative book.
I like it how she started narrating events at a top-notch. Looking forward to reading it.
I'm glad the novel is devoid of erotica. I'm a bit saddened on the use of profanity such as Mother of God. Kind of made me clinch at the use of it.

This book seems to give a recount of 2020. I think the occurrences of that year are unforgettable starting from black lives matter protests to the tragic death of Kobe Bryant. I wonder if the covid 19 pandemic is part of this narrative.

I don't think this is the right book for me since I'm not much of a basketball fan. However, this is a great book that has incorporated in it, ideas about the late legendary "Bryants"
Congratulations on the book of the day.

The premise of this fourth book seems to resemble one of the earlier Hillary Broome novel I have read and enjoyed. I wouldn't mind reading about our strong protagonist, though. Thanks for the review!
