From the moment I began In Hindsight by Sharon Bonanno and Lisa Scott, I was captivated by the story it contained. The introduction prefaces the memoir by stating, “We spent years turning away from each other in different ways, but neither of us walked away. One day we turned and saw each other again.” This beautiful sentiment crafts a stunning image that truly summarizes the years of life narrated throughout the chapters of this book.

In Hindsight is co-written by two sisters and explores the different aspects of addiction. The sisters alternate writing chapters that detail their life growing up, the difficulties of divorce and sickness, the ideas and paths that lead a person to become an addict, and what it is like to watch and experience a loved one going through addiction. The text begins with Sharon spending a cozy afternoon with her family before she receives an urgent call from her sister, Lisa. This event brings the family to confront Lisa’s addiction and begins the road to healing and forgiveness for the family.

In Hindsight is the perfect name for this book. The pages contain an honest reflection from the two sisters regarding the circumstances of their childhood and adult life. I loved learning about Sharon and Lisa’s relationship, but even more than that, I enjoyed the voice of each sister and how they explained their different perspectives on the events of their lives. The writing throughout this story is descriptive and captivating, and immerses the reader into the lives of Sharon and Lisa. The book was excellently edited and an amazing emotional, but enjoyable read. There is truly nothing I disliked about this book.

I would give In Hindsight, by Sharon Bonanno and Lisa Scott, a four out of four-star rating. The story is compelling and inspirational, the writing style is captivating and descriptive, and there is nothing about the narrative that feels out of place. The story flows smoothly and is enhanced by the two voices that tell it. The book displays a very real and tangible portrait of life that is relatable and important to see. It is honest about the joys and pitfalls of life and is a very valuable read to anyone finding their way.

This book is an incredible resource, and I would especially recommend it to anyone who has dealt with addiction or who has experienced a loved one go through addiction. Part of the dedication in this book reads, “And to anyone who feels alone. You. Are. Not.” This message speaks for itself. I would encourage anyone who feels alone, who is in need of encouragement, or who wants to be inspired by love, to read this sensational story.
