Life of Pi the movie

This deserves a new thread.

I read the book a while back and thought it was ok, nothing fantastic but a good story nonetheless. Ang Lee had quite a task making a movie of it, given its unusual setting but Im pleased to say he pulls it off with aplomb, and with epic 3D effects to boot. The story is about an Indian boy named Pi who gets stranded in the ocean when the boat he is travelling in with his family and their zoo animals sinks after a storm, he is left with nothing but an adult tiger for company and the endless days and nights. Suraj Sharma as Pi is brilliant, a real captivating young actor who at all times keeps your attention as you struggle with him to survive in the ocean with all hope lost. The animals are rendered very well in 3D and some of the better effects (like the whale emerging from the sea) take your breath away.

I would urge anyone, whether you read the book or not, to check out this film, its easily an Oscar winner and kudos to Ang Lee for making such a tricky story into a brillant film, plus the ending is also ripe for debate.

It does seem to be getting excellent reviews even from people who didn't like the book.

I have not as yet read the book ( it is there waiting for me though), but saw the movie recently, in 3D. After a bit of a slow start the movie really captivated me. The cinematography was simply outstanding and with the 3D effects the screen was alive with beauty.
I agree Suraj Sharma did a wonderful job portraying Pi. had wonderful comedic timing too,

You wouldn't think watching a movie which largely featured one boy and one tiger on a small boat would keep your attention, but it sure did.

^ I agree, it takes a lot to keep your attention when its such a simple premise but I think the lead actor and probably Ang Lee as director will pick up a few oscars next year. Its an amazing movie from only an average book.

Yep Carla, I have read it. I know I am in the minority here when I say that I loved it. It's a very short read and I have read it a couple of times. I cannot remember which books it was up against, but I think it deserved the booker in 2002.
I was however very disappointed with "Beatrice and Virgil". It is once again a very short novel, got to get around to reading it again.

Going by the reactions here, it sounds like the movie is a cracker.

Good movie.. I liked it .. Before starting the movie there is one classical based song that is good,,,,,,,,

I really enjoyed the book and the movie. I like the book better. The movie chopped out one of my fave scenes: the scene where Pi and Richard Parker were having a conversation about Thai dishes.
