Cold Fusion is a brilliant, convincing fiction of action and adventure taking place during the next two decades. After the re-election of Donald J. Trump in 2020, he returns Alaska to Russia in 2021, leading to a military coup against Trump in 2022, the beginning of the Second Civil War in 2023. By 2027, eight nations have formed from what we know today as the landmass of North America plus Hawaii. Each state becomes like a fiefdom; they set up borders and develop confrontation. With the decline of the Constitution, the civil liberties of the former United States gradually decreased.

There is a villain, Peter S. Symons, an utterly selfish and ruthless trillionaire who wants to possess the world and will eliminate anyone who stands in his way. Symons is acting as the chief of staff for James Ewell Wakefield, President of the Southern States of America (SSA), but is in no way subordinate to him. General Greenwood commands the SSA army, and Drake Swanson is Wakefield’s communication chief.

Mark Davis, an investigative journalist, is probing the causes of the Second Civil war; he senses a threat to America. He joins forces with his ex. Pam, also a journalist; perhaps, together, they can solve the mystery. They both talk to Chap Mercer; they don’t grasp it at the time, but he is a rocket scientist, lives in Doylestown and later uses a weapon to blow up the town to scare the people of Pennsylvania and as a trial run for Symons destructive desire to rule the world. Mark cannot find out who Dewey is or anything about Operation Sandman. Will Mark and Pam be able to stop Symons on their own, or will they need help?

Jenifer Kay Hood writes with a fast-paced, effortless style that compels the reader to turn each page. She includes many intriguing touches, like describing the meals at the Sy Opps café in such a way that the reader salivates. The author creatively provides minute detail about each state: difficulties with their neighbors, industries, presidents, and population, and what they want from each other. This information must have involved considerable research and represent a substantial contribution to the success of the book.

She includes many characters, and all described with enough detail for me to understand them and their motivations. I found the personality, Evelyn Langhorne, gratifying, she is old-school, patriotic and fearless, and helps first Mark Davis and then Drake Swanson get away from danger.

I encountered a significant problem with this novel: the use of the names of real people. The actions and motivations imbued to the current President of the U.S. are disrespectful and inaccurate and represent the opposite of the work accomplished by him. The use of actual names in a work of fiction could be libelous unless the author has permission. I also did not understand the relevance of the non-materializing lesbian relationship of the First Lady. It had some shock value but did not add a connection to the story.

I want to rate Cold Fusion 4 out of 4 stars because of its creativity, ingenious descriptions of the problems of the eight nations, and excellent writing. But while it uses actual names in such a disparaging way, I cannot provide the top rating. So, I rate it 3 out of 4 stars. I found no errors and believe the book to be professionally edited.

I recommend it to people who like creative fiction, investigative journalism, and the exposure of national peril. I do not recommend it to Republicans because the remarks about Trump seem politically motivated.

The story's futuristic and doesn't appear to be absurd. But the remarks about Trump discouraged me.
