Review of We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies
Galen Bray grew up in the war torn Land of the Princes, and knew only the life of devastation and hardship. Only to find out that his great uncle owned a forge in the almost mythical land of Voulhire, and Galen was his inheritor. With the help of the executor of his great uncle’s will, Galen escapes the only land he has ever known, to this new land led by a generous king, and full of mages. The people of Voulhire are happier than those in the Land of the Princes, even when they spend their lives in toil. All is not as well as it appears, however. The land of Voulhire is at war with the Riva Rojavi, a group of rebellious fanatics that date back to the very founding of Voulhire. Their goal is the absolute annihilation of the entire country, and all that it stands for. Has Galen Bray left one war torn land, only to find himself in another? Will the Riva Rohavi get accomplish their goal for complete destruction? Or will they once again be beat back?
We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz is an amazing showcase of world building that is absolutely breathtaking. The characters were also well rounded and interesting. Each with their own distinct personality, and not the cardboard cast so often found in fantasy series. Add to that, I only found one potential typo, so I believe this story to be exceptionally well edited.
My only complaint with this introduction to Voulhire, would be the tenses used to indicate the point of view shifts between the main and secondary characters. My personal preference would have been to remain in one tense, instead of first person for Galen, and third person for all others.
This was not, however, enough of a complaint for me to subtract any stars. I rate this story 4 out of 4 stars. It has been quite some time since a world has pulled me into a story far more than the characters themselves could, and I found it to be quite refreshing. I find myself wanting to read more and more about this interesting land.
I would recommend this book to all audiences interested in reading fantasy novels. There was only mild profanity, and it was used sparingly, so I do not believe most readers would be offended by the content of this book.
