A historical novel is a good way to show where we've come from in terms of where we are today. And to imagine even a woman going out on a ship unescorted was inspirational! Would love to know what happens to Becky later on after she finishes her course at the school of sewing. Did she become a fashion designer? Did she go into caring for the hurt? And how was it then for a woman?
Great read though

This seems like an interesting historical fiction that also touches on the issue of women's rights throughout history. Thanks for the great review!

I love historical fiction and like the concept of a woman pursuing her dream to be a doctor during the late 1800s despite the obvious obstacles. Still, I do worry that romances can have rather predictable plots, as pointed out in this review. Maybe I’ll check it out when I have some free time just for a fun read. Thank you for the helpful review.

The book's plot is very engaging, but much like the reviewer, I've read dozens of romance novels and will probably predict how this story ends. Congrats on BOTD!

The plot was interesting. The mix of history and romance made it worth my time, as I would have so much to look out for.

What a great review, you talk about being in the middle of the story, the way you describe it, makes me feel like I'm having a face-to-face conversation with someone. Well done

This sounds like an enlightening read. I like it when stories are set in eras long gone. It gives us a glimpse of what life was like then and an appreciation for how far we've come as a race. I'd really love to know the unimaginable deeds Becky committed to make it up the ladder of her medical career.

Being from a former communist European country, I have little knowledge of American history so it would be a very interesting read for me. In addition, I love the feminist struggle against traditional roles.

A very comprehensive review. The author should also be applauded for deftly managing to elicit sympathy from the reader for certain characters in her book. I feel for Emily, for instance. Her death is a double blow both to her lonely background and her rosy dreams.
