A historical novel is a good way to show where we've come from in terms of where we are today. And to imagine even a woman going out on a ship unescorted was inspirational! Would love to know what happens to Becky later on after she finishes her course at the school of sewing. Did she become a fashion designer? Did she go into caring for the hurt? And how was it then for a woman?

I love historical fiction and like the concept of a woman pursuing her dream to be a doctor during the late 1800s despite the obvious obstacles. Still, I do worry that romances can have rather predictable plots, as pointed out in this review. Maybe I’ll check it out when I have some free time just for a fun read. This sounds like an enlightening read. I like it when stories are set in eras long gone. It gives us a glimpse of what life was like then and an appreciation for how far we've come as a race. I'd really love to know the unimaginable deeds Becky committed to make it up the ladder of her medical career.

A very comprehensive review. The author should also be applauded for deftly managing to elicit sympathy from the reader for certain characters in her book. I feel for Emily, for instance. Her death is a double blow both to her lonely background and her rosy dreams.
