A nice historical-fiction story relating to war, history, and espionage can be found in the book "Forgotten Heroes of wW-II, the French Resistance" by Luis Gil Armendariz, which follows Herman and Karina, US citizens. They secretly defy the Neutrality Law to volunteer as pilots for Great Britain to fight against the Germans in WWII. This book looks appealing to me.
