Review of Firstborn Daddyman
First Born "Daddyman" by Frank Bailey is a captivating non-fiction about the life and times of the author. The book starts by narrating his childhood which was spent amongst a large family even though his father was absent. At 17 years of age, he joined the United States Marine Corps, he later became a crack addict for 13 years, and eventually became a drug dealing kingpin. How did a marine become a drug dealer? Did the long arm of the law catch up with him or did he escape? The storyline is so riveting, it is a must-read. Frank Bailey lived a tumultuous and violent life. The violence occurs mainly during his drug-dealing years. He had a lot of potential as a child, but his parents and society failed him, and so like many others, he took the path of self-destruction. It got so bad that the Federal Bureau of Investigation came after him, assassins were sent to kill him, how could he survive it all? Indeed, this is a most fascinating story.
This book is fast-paced and concise, so it doesn't bore the reader. Frank infuses the novel with stories that enthrals the reader from the beginning of the book till the end. The narrative is honest and objective; the author even gives a brief account of how he engaged in the abuse of some members of his family. Through the well-crafted story depicting Frank's drug addiction, multiple sexual partners, racist experiences, being a deadbeat dad, and religion; this book reflects the experience of many black people in the United States.
I love this book because it is very encouraging; one of the major themes in the story is 'redemption'. The author inspires the downtrodden to become hopeful, seek the face of God, and overcome their challenges. If you are going through hard times, you certainly want to read this book.
I enjoyed First Born "Daddyman" greatly, however, there are many grammatical errors. These errors are substantial, hence it is my opinion that the book is not professionally edited. Another negative aspect is the presence of some plot holes in the text. An example of such a plot hole is: the reader is not told what happened to Frank's girlfriends and the children they bore him. Consequently, I rate Firstborn "Daddyman" 3 out of 4 stars. I struck out one star because of the grammatical errors and plot holes. I did not rate it lower than this, because the book is such an enjoyable read that the flaws in the text can be easily ignored.
I recommend this book to people that are going through hard times and need some encouragement. I as well endorse it to all lovers of non-fiction.
