Welcome to the brilliant lands of Voulhire, where progress advances as swiftly as its enemies! Author Matthew Tysz immediately drops the reader into conflict from the prologue, where the lord of a long-forgotten southern fishing town is executed by a powerful mage. One gets a sense of the extent to which great tragedy will strike throughout this fast-paced read, regardless of how "golden aged" things may seem on the surface.

While reading We Are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies, I was immediately captivated by the imagery and the originality Tysz poured into this novel. His writing style grips the reader from the first page and doesn't let go until the final sentence. The braided chapters of different perspectives throughout Voulhire make for well-rounded, three-dimensional characters in a thrilling fantasy novel that I couldn't put down. Trust me, I read it in four days.

That being said, some of the scenes I anticipated nail-biting action in came up a bit lackluster and lost in translation. While I had no problem adapting to the terminology of the novel, as Tysz was gracious enough to include a glossary, I believe another glance over certain scenes and details would have strengthened the novel further.

I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars in spite of my criticism, as there are several more books in this series that I am itching to pick up! All in all, Tysz did a fantastic job in projecting the story he built in his head. Despite small grammatical oversights and weaker scenes than I had expected, it was a thrilling read cover-to-cover.

For reasons of explicit scenes and language, I would recommend this novel for more mature audiences; I am not one for censorship, and this novel wouldn't have had the same punch without its unorthodox mature content, but I wouldn't recommend this novel for younger teens.
