The book A Story of Bad by Edward M. Krauss attracts attention with its short but informative title. At the heart of this murder mystery is the ComFitter factory. The small but successful family sewing business will become the scene of the murder of its owner Victor Pritkin. A series of illogicalities slowed down the official police investigation, and soon one of the factory workers fell victim. Are these two murders connected? What is the motive? Is the perpetrator of both murders the same?

These and other open questions are dealt with by capable journalist June Replyn and experienced detective Terry Stans. Their informal alliance in to discover the perpetrators of the murders will gradually get a romantic note. The closed Cambodian community, from which a significant part of the employees in the small sewing factory comes, will gradually open up to patient researchers. However, all the time, the shadow of doubt hovers equally over the children of the founder of ComFitter.

What I really liked about A Story of Bad is the intelligently conceived plot. The author very skillfully holds the readers' attention to the last page. Just when it seems to readers that they can identify the killer and the motive for the crime with certainty, the author introduces new evidence and witnesses. Realistically written dialogues in the right places contribute greatly to the quality of the book. Edward M. Krauss has also very well thought out several details related to the Cambodian community, from their way of pronunciation of the English language to their way of thinking and habits. In addition to the carefully studied Cambodian culture, the writer also conceived the characters of the journalist Replyn and Detective Stans. Before the eyes of the readers, there will be descriptions that authentically evoke the atmosphere of the meeting with the editor or the rivalry between journalists. Perhaps the greatest quality of the book is the sense of the pace of the plot and the author's gift for uncertainty. To many readers of the book, it will also act as a script for a rather successful film.

It’s very hard to find anything I didn’t like in the book A Story of Bad. If I had to point out the less perfect part of the book, then it would certainly be overly detailed descriptions of various meals. Also, in one place, there is less illogicality when the founder of the ComFitter factory is called by someone else's name.

It is with great pleasure that I rate the book A Story of Bad with four out of four stars. Well-conceived characters carry the plot of this page-turner very well. The writer has repeatedly shown exceptional knowledge of psychology. The book was very pleasant to read, to which chapters of moderate length also contribute. Realistic dialogues and fantastic descriptions of people, spaces, and atmosphere only solidified my decision.

I recommend A Story of Bad to fans of murder mysteries, fans of well-written books, but also readers who want to check their power of logical reasoning. Due to the occasional use of profanity, love scenes, and murder scenes, I think that the book is not suitable for younger readers.
