If your practices and systems for getting paid are not sufficient, you would not only end up doing business for free but will also lead your business into oblivion. Collect the Cash: The Sale is Not Complete Until the Money is in the Bank! by Dee Bowden is a book that seeks to equip businesses with proven strategies for collecting payments. The author hopes that once readers finish this book, they would be experts on collecting their payments and having longevity in business.

The author started by narrating her experiences and introduced readers to how she developed her “mindset over money” approach to business. The author then introduces readers to four key factors that play crucial roles in money collection while explaining the importance of knowing how to collect money. Bowden then uses a flowchart to explain the five-puzzle-piece system to show how the cash flow process applies to business. We then learn about certain positions that should be filled in a collections team or department, depending on the size of the company. Finally, we are then exposed to several tested tips for collecting cash and more.

It is usually an uncomfortable process when the time comes for me to cash in on an invoice after doing a job, and that’s the reason I was excited to pick up this book. I can say that I’ve learned a few things upon completing the book. I can’t wait to try some of Bowden's suggestions to see if I can collect what I have recently called “bad debt” in my business. I like books that seek to help people solve real problems, and this one does just that. Money is an integral part of life, and if your expenses outweigh your revenue at any point, you’re done. However, nothing is ever straightforward in life; this is why I am pleased the author didn’t suggest that her methods are foolproof or easy to follow.

Another thing I like about the book is the way the author tries to gain the confidence of the readers in the beginning by telling her story. While I read through how she lost her job, I felt motivated and more receptive to her message. Bowden didn’t try to paint a perfect career for herself; so many authors are guilty of this. An author with a perfect career full of ups is less likely to motivate readers who are only reading books because they have failed at something and are searching for a better way. While the author makes some suggestions that seem common knowledge, you’ll agree with me that “common sense is indeed uncommon.” I’m also pleased with the glossary and appendix pages. In those pages, the author not only explained several terms that were used throughout the book but also gave a summary of everything that was talked about.

I can’t think of any negative thing in the book, and I rate it 4 out of 4 stars. My favorite thing about the 56-page publication is the flowchart the author used to explain the cash flow process. The illustration not only made me understand better but also prepared me for the book's primary message. Moreover, the book is professionally edited. If you want to learn effective ways you can collect your money after doing a job, this book is for you. Business owners are also encouraged to take a look at this book.

Seems like a great book. Business owners are encouraged to know that at the end of the day, money needs to be made. Money is the end-game. Great book review.
