Review of The Trials of Uwe, Parts I, II and III
The Trials of Uwe Parts I, II & III written by Steven L Masia, is a novel following the journey of Uwe and his companions as they battle to ensure that Evilor, an evil entity, does not destroy their world to create a new one. As Uwe enters his journey following the death of his loved one, he struggles to find himself and to continue his quest and purpose to the world he resides in. This novel shows the reader the trials of a hero and as they struggle to control their internal feelings and execute the almost impossible task of saving the world.
To start, I really liked the plot line as well as the characters of the story. I liked the values of the main character, as he felt refreshing and new. The antagonists were also very different from the norm as the way in which the author portrayed them was done uniquely. The plot was also very captivating, it made me want to keep reading and find out what happens in the next scene along with how it all unfolds. I would say the plot and characters were what I liked most about this book.
However, I found that I did not like the writing style of the author. It felt awkward and clunky and there was a lack of descriptions throughout the story. In addition, the author frequently information dumped in dialogues and characters’ thoughts, which made the story seem a little, like a textbook. In addition, I felt that the novel could have used some editing in terms of ensuring there was no redundant information or too much information in a scene. Overall, these issues were what I disliked most about the book.
Lastly, I would rate this book a two out of four stars due to the reasons stated in the above paragraphs. This book would have received a hire rating if the novel seemed as if it was professionally edited but it did not seem so. In addition, the dialogue could have also used some refining as it sounded awkward at times and was extremely long sometimes spanning pages. Furthermore, the author could have utilized creative ways to include information in short quantities.
In conclusion, I thoroughly enjoyed the plot and the characters especially Uwe and Amanill however; the lack of editing and the overall awkwardness of the writing style in this book prompted me to give this book a low rating. In addition, this novel does contain sexual themes along with violent themes. If this book was better edited I would have recommended this book
