Review of Higher Ground
Higher Ground is a non-fiction book authored by Dr. Sophia Edwards-Bennett. The author was motivated to write this book after being a co-author in another book that discussed success. According to her, success is being able to fulfill her life's passion. Her success is in the fulfillment she gets when she dedicates her time to her career in oncology. Oncology is her life's passion. She wrote this book to provide cancer patients with a practical guide for facile clinical implementation.
How is the title of this book related to the psychological aspects of cancer treatment? The author gives a narration of how she once climbed Blue Mountain in Jamaica. Despite going on that adventure with a group of friends, the hike was still grueling. It took them much longer to reach the peak than she had initially envisioned. On the way to the top, she started questioning her commitment to that venture. She even thought of quitting. Once they arrived at the summit, she realized all the struggles on the way up were worth it. The view from the top of the mountain was breathtaking. She metaphorically correlates this story with life.
The PDF version of this book was the audio transcription of the audiobook version. The tone of the book is conversational. This tone fits perfectly with what this book is all about; a self-help book meant to empower cancer patients. When reading this book, you feel like the author is directly speaking to the readers. It is like she is having a conversation with them. Readers will easily relate to what she is discussing in this book. The relaxed conversation tone adopted in this book also makes the book seem credible.
As usual, self-help books are always informative. This book was no different. There were a lot of takeaways from this book; I loved the author's definition of success. I know that the definition of success in life varies from one individual to another. Most of the time, people attribute success to having things that make their life comfortable. According to the author, success is fulfilling her life purpose. Her life purpose is to serve her patients. The fact that helping others fulfills her soul is inspiring.
There is nothing I disliked in this book. It had a few grammatical errors, but they did not affect the reading experience. This book is a quick read, and the language used is easy to comprehend. With that mentioned, I don't have any reason to take away any stars from my ratings. I give this book a rating of 4 out of 4 stars. Cancer patients and people who have loved ones undergoing cancer treatment should give this book a read.
