Anxiety and stress are nowadays terms we encounter on a daily basis, especially within the past one to two years; because they have become a routine part of our vocabulary, anxiety and stress may have also inadvertently acquired a connotation of normalcy, which is concerning at best. People quickly self-diagnose without seeking the help of professionals, which gives doubters a reason to discount and minimize the feelings of those who actually suffer from these conditions. If you are a doubter, or if you are a person who just started suffering from anxiety, give this book a try and make it a starting point in your journey of self-discovery.

Natural Relief for Anxiety and Stress: A Practical Guide by Gustavo Kinrys and Alexandra Golden outlines a comprehensive description of anxiety and stress, their symptoms and some of their causes, and the effects on our physical bodies. The authors lead the reader down the path of understanding the basics of these mental health conditions, from symptoms, misconceptions, causes and coping strategies to the consequences of ignoring them in the long term. The authors also ague - and justly so - that, unlike any other physical conditions/illnesses/diseases, anxiety and stress are not given the attention they deserve in our physicians’ practices. They are often discounted, minimized, and ignored, thereby giving the sufferers the impression that anxiety and stress are not of primary importance and that they would somehow dissipate on their own without taking any action.

As a sufferer of anxiety and panic disorder who has read countless books, articles, and studies on the subject, a good portion of the information in the first half of the book was nothing new (although a pretty thorough refresher). However, I found the authors’ approach of addressing fear along with anxiety and stress as unique; fear is often addressed by professionals in the field in the context of anxiety and panic attacks, and not as a separate entity; fear is oftentimes merely used as a synonym to explain these conditions. In Natural Relief for Anxiety and Stress: A Practical Guide , fear is addressed separately, which is enlightening.

Again, as a sufferer, I am constantly in search of new strategies, new science, and new supplementation that could possibly assist in better managing my conditions. There is a vast amount of information out there and it can get pretty laborious to sift through it all. What I enjoyed most about this book is that the authors include a comprehensive list of relief methods, such as supplementation, different types of therapies, natural remedies, breathing and relaxation techniques, diet and nutrition information, as well as the importance of physical exercise. The part I found most helpful was that the authors do not simply supply a list; rather, they offer ample explanation for each supplement, each alternative therapy, and each relaxation technique. I found this especially important and I will definitely reference this book often in the future.

While I tremendously enjoyed this book, I did so mostly because of the chapters on supplementation, therapies, natural remedies, and breathing and relaxation techniques. The first half of the book is, in my opinion, mostly useful to those in need of surface level information. I wish it also addressed conditions such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) as both of these conditions include components of anxiety, fear, and stress. Because of the aforementioned reasons, I rate this book a 3 out of 4 stars .

That being said, I absolutely recommend this book to those with a new diagnosis or currently in the investigative process, as well to those who have been suffering for a while as it provides a vast amount of information on potentially life changing strategies.
