Darren Burch retired from law enforcement with a lot of stories to tell, and Twisted but True is a compilation of some of the most bizarre events that took place during his time on the force. Readers will find some of these stories to be hilarious, some to be heart-warming and others to be downright weird, but they all come together to tell the story of the author’s memorable journey as a police officer.

The author began on the path of public service in his teenage years when he encountered a fatal car crash and was not able to help all the passengers involved. Though he did save a pair of lives, a victim was lost, and for years after the author would revisit that scenario in his head, wondering how things could have gone differently. This and another key event from his past, would spur him on to seek out a career in law enforcement, perhaps without anticipating how strange some of his experiences would be. In his time, he tackled a runaway adult child, a truant cow and a call straight out of the The Walking Dead. But it wasn’t all antics, as he also endured some of the risks that come with the profession including close-scrapes and losing colleagues.

Content-wise, Twisted but True is not lacking. The writing was kind of plain, and a little repetitive at times, but that did not make the stories any less impactful or interesting. I think the author did a good enough job of recounting these events to readers, and the only aspect which I would fault him for would be the editing. The errors I found weren’t particularly outrageous, but I still found enough of them to earn this book a deduction. Aside from that, the rest of the book was more or less okay.

My rating of Twisted but True by Darren Burch is, therefore, three out of four stars. The book really made an impact on me, and it almost felt like I was living through the author’s experiences in real time. He painted a really clear image of what his life in service was like and was able to turn it into entertainment.

I would recommend this book to readers who enjoy the crime genre and episodic-style stories. It’s not too serious and you’ll find yourself chuckling most of the time. But readers should be aware that this book contains some strong language and age-sensitive contents. I would not recommend it to younger readers.
