The novel Solaris Seethes (Solaris book 1) by Jane McNulty takes place in outer space where our protagonists together with Solaris (the ship) are on a mission to save the whole universe. We have Rynah, the team leader, who comes from Lanyr who must enlist the four humans form Earth (Terra Sector) mentioned from a prophecy. Each has a quality about their character that makes them the choosen ones: Alfric is dauntless, Brie is empathetic, Solon is wise and Tom is ingenious. They all come from different timelines and they must all put aside their differences and work in unity to prevent Klanor from getting all the crystals together to make an ammunition that has the ability to annihilate all existence.

What was pleasent about this book is the diversity of the characters. In racial identiy and gender the author did a great job at being inclusive. Another thing that McNulty did really well was the description of the planets and character's physicality. The need to show the audience what she sees in her mind was emphasised by her consistency. It helped create an image but it aslo engaged my other senses with sound, smell and taste.

What was unpleasent was the how underdeveloped the characters were. They just lacked something real or tangile. They felt two-dimensional and flat. Maybe it is because this is the first book of the saga but even with that said, it just felt unsatisfying. Especially the dialouge, it almost bored me to death. Her attempt was okay but there really was potential for her to bring it to another level but she missed the target. Even the plot was not that exciting, I almost gave up reading. There was no climax and the plot twist was honestly not touching enough to incite an emotional reaction. Everything was so predicatble and I was not at the edge of my seat. The way the book ended definetly did not entice me enough to want to ever read book 2, nonetheless the whole saga.

This book deserves a 2 out of 4 stars. I would have given it less but it was not that bad. Nor was it good enough. It was just okay. There was a lot that the book lacked especially with plot and character but there was a few good things with the way that things were described.

The audience that would find this book enjoyable would be pre-teens. It is definetly has the right mix of good plot and characters for that reading age perhaps even early teens might enjoy this book. This is not a book for those who want next level science fiction adventures, nor is it for late teens or young adults.

Thank you for that. It really had potential for something better but it missed the mark
