Yesterday is a historical fiction romance novel authored by Samyann. It is a story about a girl who has suffered so many heartbreaks that in order to survive, she vowed to never let anyone in on her life. She pushes everyone who tries to get closer to her because she has convinced herself that she is the problem. This book is different and captivating. You won’t put it down until you have read to the last page.

The book opens up with a girl by the name of Amanda walking down the street in the city, taking in all the environment around her. She sees the activities that are typical of the city. People are walking around, and beggars are asking for money. It is all normal until an accident happens. Without really thinking, she finds herself going out of her way to save a policeman who is trapped under the rubble. After helping the policeman, she also gets hurt and falls, and the policeman she just saved calls for help.

Amanda wakes up in a hospital, and she learns that she is a hero. People have witnessed what she has done in that accident. The name of a policeman she saved is Mark Callahan. He visits her at the hospital, and from there, they feel this intense feeling between them. After the buzz of the media has faded, Mark and Amanda are left alone to deal with what they are feeling for each other.

Mark wants to date Amanda, but she doesn’t want to let him in. She always pushes him away, even though he can tell that the feeling is mutual. Amanda is scared of loving Mark because all the people she loves always leave, most by dying. She doesn’t think she can take losing Mark, especially because what she feels for him is something stronger than what she has ever felt for anyone. But not only that, the feeling she has for him, well, it is familiar, but how she doesn’t know. It’s like they have met before, but where? Read this book to journey with Amanda and Mark as they try to figure out if they knew each other before and if they could have a future together forever.

I enjoyed reading this book. I thought it was a typical romance with cliché storylines. No, this one was totally different. I have never read anything like it before. The storyline was fused with historical fiction elements that came out perfect. It was primarily set in modern days, but it switched to the past in the late 1800s, during the American Civil War.

The author wrote a very convincing and lovely tale. The author introduced the characters so smoothly without shoving them down our throats. The backstories that the author provided made sure that the characters were understood by the reader and, in turn, were relatable. The book tended to lean more on narration than the dialogue. This wasn’t bad because the author made sure that the descriptions were enough to draw pictures in the reader’s mind. I was able to see things as they happened. I didn’t feel like I was outside looking in. The monologues made the book more enjoyable, and I felt intimate with the characters.

The author’s research was outstanding. It was evident when the characters of different generations spoke differently from each other. Bonnie’s dialect wasn’t the same as Amanda’s.

The cliff-hangers that each chapter closed with made sure that the reader was drawn in the story from start to finish. There was never a dull moment.

My favourite character was Mark. I loved how he didn’t give up on Amanda. He was always there to assure her of his love for her. This showed that he truly loved her and would do anything to be with her, even if it meant he had to wait a little longer as she was a working process.

There is nothing worth mentioning that I can say I disliked about this book. It ticked most of my boxes, even those I didn’t know I had.

The book seemed to be professionally edited as I came across only one error. The reading was smooth and enjoyable. There is the usage of profane language, although it is not that strong. The book doesn’t discriminate, so everyone can read it with ease. For that, I am proud to rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. People who love romance with a touch of historical fiction will love it.
