Review of Running the Sahara
In my first year of university, I started running every weekend. There was a special area where people exercised together on my campus. Activities such as running, walking, bicycling, and playing badminton are the most common ones. I like to be in the running community, even though I am not a professional runner. My mom even gave me a pair of running shoes when she found out that I had a new hobby. Fast forward, when I was running with a friend, she told me, "You could compete in a marathon. You're pretty fast!" Before that time, I'd never thought of running in a marathon, but after she said that, I started to think about it, and I started to get brochures about marathons. However, I have no experience and am absolutely a beginner runner. I don't want to be injured or anything bad that can happen to me. Luckily, I found a book that may help, Running The Sahara, a book by Marcel Nickler.
Nickler had participated in the Marathon des Sables, one of the most challenging adventures a passionate runner can sign up to, which is really cool. In his book, he talks much about his time in the desert, his preparation, and the equipment he uses. I like how he made it simple to explain everything. I also like his personal story as a runner. Reading about his dream and his determination to achieve it is fascinating. He said that he has to be a stick-to-the-plan man to achieve all his goals. When I read that, I didn't think that I could do it like him. I don't think I could make a start. But I remember his first answer to everyone when he was asked why he did it, "Because I can." Now I know his secret; he believes in himself, and I have to.
However, there is one thing that I dislike about this book. The author mentions many scientific arguments, but he doesn't always link them to a specific study. For example, he said, "The body should have at least 3 hours to get going before the start of a race," without mentioning where he got the claim. Without referring to a specific study, it is hard for me to believe and follow the advice.
Therefore, I will rate this book with 3 out of 4 stars. It is simple and practical, two characteristics that will immediately make you fall in love with this book. The author also has a sense of humor, so reading this book will not make you bored, at least for me. Besides, there are some simple illustrations that I think make the book look cute.
If you plan to join a marathon, reading this book must be included in your preparation, even before you do any preparation. This book will tell you how to be a well-prepared runner, especially in your first marathon.
