This book stumbles a bit to get the plot going, but once this thriller crime novel gets going its very entertaining and I couldn’t put it down until it was finished. Killing your Best Friend by Valda Taurus starts off with one of the main characters (Tammy) struggling to fall asleep and witnesses something unusual outside her window. The next morning, we find out that a crime took place the night before and now the police are at Tammy’s door to ask her questions. Come to find out, a murder had taken place at her neighbor’s house. Once the case is taken on by Detective Mohr the novel really hits its stride as he struggles to uncover the truth about what happened at Alexander and Marta Gray’s house that night.
The book has adult content not only with profanity but also with sexual situations and innuendos and shouldn’t only be read by mature readers.

One thing the novel struggles with is with the language that is used in action sequences. It’s not very clear and I found myself rereading these moments to figure out who was doing what because on the first read through it was a bit confusing and not very clear.

Overall, the novel is very good, the conclusions that are made in the case against Alexander Gray are logical and make sense, and how Detective Mohr uncovers more about the case with the people involved, Marta, Alexander, Alexander’s daughter, Dustin, Tammy, etc. makes it even more compelling. The setting is very well written (small Alaskan town) you get the sense of the isolation and how these people had to rely on their neighbors for help, which ultimately makes this murder more shocking since you get a real sense of community within this town.

I enjoyed reading the secrets uncovered by Detective Mohr and Tammy and many were shocking that made me what to read more to see how the story wraps itself up. The ending is satisfying and then at the same time isn’t. However, for me, I like how the author left Tammy and Detective Mohr’s relationship status vague. There were too many things that Tammy and Mohr had to take care of before they could really commit to anything so the way the author left it I really enjoyed it. It was nice to read a story where the two main romantic interests didn’t get together.

The author needs to work on transitions between chapters, clear up her language in the action sequences but other than that the novel is unique, compelling, and you come to really enjoy the characters and story.

I give it 3 out of 4 stars
