Review of The Poe Consequence
The Poe Consequences by Keith Steinbaum has the feels of gangs gone supernatural. We follow the key gang members from the gangs the Diablos and the Lobos, as well Warren Palmer and his family. Palmer's family goes out to a baseball game in Los Angles on night that will change them all forever and tie both gangs and the family into a tangled web of supernatural mystery. It only takes one gun shot to set their fates onto a long, troublesome road that is full of heartbreak and mystery. The gangs both begin suffering "heart attacks" that kill many of their members. These attacks only strike after the members do. There is no evidence left at the crime scenes, except that the deaths from the "heart attacks" follow some similarities from works by Edgar Allen Poe. Things become even stranger when the words that Warren Palmer spoke come back to haunt his family. He was heavy into righting wrongs and it seemed that the killer agreed with him. Alejandro Torres of the Diablos notices more than the others, he believes there is more to the killings than meets the eye. However, King from the Lobos is the opposite. He knows things are a little odd but doesn't care. He likes things how they are. The police department is as baffled about the killings as everyone else. They try everything they can to make the attacks stop. Only one person can stop it and not in the simplest way.
There are a few things like I liked about this book. Steinbaum keeps you wondering what will happen next and which character will find out the next clue. It's fast paced and makes you want to finish the book as soon as possible. I also enjoyed the character development throughout the novel. They overcome many challenges and learn a lot from each other.
I did not enjoy some of the more graphic, violent scenes, but that is to be expected in a book about gangs. At times it was a little difficult to follow who knew what since you see things from different character's view points. It would have flowed a little better if some of the characters had communicated a little more with each other so we knew who was on what page with the information.
I would rate this book 3 out 4 stars . It was a good read, but had several grammatical errors. It was a little hard to follow at some points but it had a good plot that was interesting. It covered up all of the loose ends and gave an ending to the characters that made sense and followed their development.
This book is not for the faint of heart. Starting on page 15 we see strong language that is used throughout the book. There is also sexual suggestions throughout it. The gangs are both into violence and killing which are sometimes a little graphic. This for mature readers. This would be good for someone looking for a thriller novel.
