Review of Your Soul Is Calling: Healing Our Ego Addiction
Your Soul is Calling: Healing Our Ego Addiction written by Jerry Hirschfield is an invaluable resource for assisting readers with examining the world around them in terms of the true reality that exists outside the individual human perspective. Hirschfield presents his model for understanding the world as the Energy Model of the Omniverse. This Energy Model is comprised of unlimited multiverses as well as the infinite energy that is contained within them. Two realms exist in Hirschfield’s model, the Energy Realm that he defines as reality, and the Physical Realm in which the egos of individuals call the “real world”. Hirschfield additionally defines the Physical Realm as being an illusory creation of individual egos who are addicted to the perceived reality that they have created. However, this egocentric reality is a false reality. Only the Energy Realm consists of our “true” reality.
Hirschfield defines ego addiction as a disease. The extensive forms of ego that exist cause tremendous pain and suffering among individuals. The Physical Realm of these individuals is an illusion that is pushed forth as a necessary element, seemingly essential to their being, as they live in the created constructs of their world. However, Hirschfield presents the Energy Realm as the only form of reality that is necessary for individuals to live contently. Hirschfield grips the reader with his explanation of our lives as energy waves that are initially given complete freedom to do as we choose. He then explains how the development of an ego builds an energy barrier to isolate itself and to keep away other egos. In doing so, egos remain trapped and unable to build connections with the infinite energy surrounding them. This infinite energy within the Energy Realm is based on the ever-present existence of an all-knowing, infinitely loving, benevolent power greater than the individual. Our existence in this Energy Realm is defined as our Soul, and our contentment in true reality depends on voluntarily surrendering our ego from the Physical Realm to the infinite energy of this benevolent power in the Energy Realm. Hirschfield proclaims that each of us retains infinite knowledge of this energy at the spiritual level, thus surrendering our egos to the power of the Energy Realm will remove us from our physical illusion and awaken our knowledge to progress on our true path of complete freedom. “Since egos are much subdued or non-existent in the Spiritual Realm, existence itself becomes an easy, effortless endeavor yielding happiness and joy for All” (page 116).
The most positive aspect of this book is the solution that Hirschfield presents to heal the disease of ego addiction. The author uses a traditional twelve-step fellowship program familiar to the field of recovery from addiction. He pairs this program with principles of philosophy to provide a guidebook for achieving freedom from our egocentric lives. The Science of Mind principles encompass the existence of an all-positive, infinite power, greater than the individual, found within each of our souls to which we must voluntarily surrender. Although Hirschfield does use the name God to describe this power, this book is not founded on any specific religious faith, but rather encompasses all faiths. Thus, his writing will appeal to a wide range of readers who are interested in reviewing his perspective, and his detailed description of the steps in his program provides quality guidelines to succeed. Furthermore, Science of Mind philosophy holds that “each of us is totally free to determine the course of our life as we intend by availing ourselves of the Infinite Power within us and applying It in accord with the fundamental principles of the Omniverse, and that Truth is revealed to us through our own intuition when we learn to listen to it correctly, which in the Energy Model means without interference from our ego” (page 248).
The only negative aspect of this book is related to the extremely long structure of Hirschfield’s explanations. I entirely feel that Hirschfield intended well with his proposal, but many of his thoughts and examples for how this program can be used effectively to surrender our egos are quite wordy. There is a lot of information to consume, and I highly recommend it be read in small doses.
I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. It is a thoughtfully crafted ideology that contains a wealth of wisdom for reconnecting with one’s own spiritual pathway. This is a deeply thought-provoking read that deserves quality time to digest with each concept presented. If prepared to make a change, many readers will find useful information to assist with handling even the most difficult challenges in their lives.
I believe Your Soul is Calling: Healing Our Ego Addiction will be a most beneficial read to those of a philosophical mindset, but it will also assist with broadening the perspectives of those curious outside the school of thought. I applaud Jerry Hirschfield for diving into this genre of self-help literature to assist with guiding readers to move forward on their spiritual journey. He presents a fresh look at the world around us and assists with sharpening our focus on how we approach the way we live our lives to promote contentment within human society.
