Four young teens decide to spend their evening in a cabin to study for their SATS the next day, but their plans for the night go awry when an unexpected storm and an even more unexpected visitor arrive. What's supposed to be a quiet night turns into an abrupt supernatural adventure with a strange dagger, glowing eyes, and an unforgettable trip to the Golfers' Association Clubhouse. Danger, humor, and supernatural occurrences unfold in J.R.R.R. (Jim) Harrison's novel Demon Freaks.

Demon Freaks by J.R.R.R. (Jim) Harrison is a YA (Young Adult) supernatural fiction book that throws the reader straight into the action. I enjoyed the supernatural plot and mystery aspects of this story. It felt like an original take on the well-known Good versus Evil theme. The author doesn't spoon-feed or overindulge you with information. Some novels with supernatural themes can be overcomplicated and overexplained, leading to readers feeling bored or disinterested. The author uses the different points of view of his teen characters to tell the story, so you can discover all the mysteries as they experience them. This makes the story interesting and fun to follow, especially because each teen has a unique reaction to the danger that is unfolding around them.

A story with multiple characters can enrich a reader's experience but also cause some issues. These types of books are sometimes not able to develop each character properly within one novel. I feel that this is the case for Demon Freaks. The author mainly focuses on developing his main male characters. The female character, Kaitlyn, is not given any background story and does not have any distinct personality traits. You could defend this writing decision with the fact that the end of the book suggests a sequel, maybe Kaitlyn's character is going to be developed in the second book.

I also found that the humor in this story was a bit boring and juvenile. We all have a different sense of humor, so I would not judge this book too harshly on that aspect. The book contained some profanity and graphic violence that would not suit middle-grade but I found that the plot, humor, and characters felt a little underdeveloped for YA fiction.

I would rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. The book was enjoyable but the simple plot, characters, and childlike humor did not appeal to me. I believe this is because the book is (or should be) targeted more towards a younger audience. I am a young adult but I think this book would suit readers still in school.

Despite my negatives, this book was still a fun and quick read, and I would recommend it to young readers in their early teens who enjoy fast-paced supernatural mysteries with silly jokes and a bit of danger.
