Review of Illustrated Short Fiction of William H. Coles: 2000-2016
Ever just sat and stared at the ceiling after completing a story because it affected your whole existence? Illustrated Short Fiction of William H. Coles: 2000-2016 is a short fiction that includes 33 short fiction stories, 2 graphic novels, and one novella. The impassioning short stories reveal actual human behavior and thinking. The stories felt realistic and the endings provided implicit morals. Each story explores all different aspects of life that make the reader question and think about life.
On the one hand, the story "The Gift" talks about the prejudice a mother feels for her daughter's child, and on the other hand, the story "Nemesis" talks about the unconditional love of a husband for his wife whom he loses. Every story delves into casualties of life that bring out one human trait in the conclusion of the story.
Some stories did not grab my attention like "The Bear" which I felt lacked plot development. The story "The Stonecutter" started off really well, arousing a sense of curiosity but the ending didn't satisfy me, I found it a bit aimless.
Out of all short fiction, I liked Suchin's escape because the story delivers a deep message. There are 2 graphic novels; I enjoyed reading both. The illustrations could have been better. The novella at the end portrays family dynamics, and I liked the way it was written.
Overall, I liked the whole book. Moreover, I liked the short stories more than the novella and the graphic novel. The author has used good language but I find the writing style a bit uninteresting. Sometimes I felt that there should have been more details given for a particular character, situation, or the event taking place. The book will not bore you because the stories are short and manage to capture one's attention. The story is well-paced. I always felt curious about the next story after completing one.
The book is well-edited and contains no errors. It contains profanities at certain places and also some erotic content. I recommend this book to people above the age of 18 because of the above reason. People who find long stories boring and like to read realistic stuff can also give this book a try.
I give this book a 3 out of 4 stars because I think the storyline of all stories was interesting enough, but it lacked character development and the writing style is passable.
