How To Be Successful by M. Curtis McCoy is one of the best books on self-help and leadership that I have read. It tells the author's story and has many interviews of successful people from different struggles of life. In the beginning, McCoy shares his own story. At the young age of 27, he already was what we would call successful. He owned companies in various industries including, medical, fashion, and distribution, among others. But everything changed when he was diagnosed with brain cancer. He started losing his independence and bits of his memory. Instead of being demotivated, McCoy decided to focus on what success truly means and asked several successful people their definition of it. This book includes his life learnings and those interviews with other successful people.

The book is divided into 27 different chapters. Each contains an interview or a method to follow on your road to success. It has a total of 7 interviews with some famous personalities like Nathan Schulhof and McCoy's mother, Connie Wyatt. The interviews give a good insight into their personalities and their definition of success. The book has some generic self-help advice like eat well, exercise, and learn to say no. He gives all the vital tips, but the perspective is truly unique and inspirational. What makes this book special is the actual motive of the author for writing this book. He was at a point where it would be easy for most people to give up, but he did not. Instead, he becomes more determined to achieve the true meaning of success and explains it in proper detail with this book.

The part I liked most was the interviews. They were packed with interesting questions about taking important decisions, addressing and managing their shortcomings, their choice of book, among all else. And even more interesting were their answers. All of them had their unique and interesting idea of success. It goes on to show how different people portray success in a certain way. Also, this book addresses some questions which are not found in many self-help books. It answers questions like, what happens when you get to the top? What comes next? These are some thought-provoking and interesting questions answered in this book.

The only thing that bothered me a bit was the religious aspect of some interviews. It is true that their beliefs indeed make them who they are, but their answers to some questions were very generic and not uncommon. Also, the editing was professional. I could not find any errors in this book. For these reasons, I would rate it 4 out of 4 stars.

All in all, How To Be Successful is one of the best self-help books I've come across. Some of the interviews are heavy on religious aspects. So, I would recommend atheists approach this book open-mindedly. This book is full of important knowledge and useful advice. I can easily recommend it to anyone on their path to success. And if you are someone who loves self-help books, this should be your next read.
