The McCoy’s Before the Feud takes place in 1865, the ending of the Civil War. The northern soldiers had begun collecting weapons from southern soldiers as part of their surrender, after which, they were free to return to what little remained of their pillaged homes and farms. When the story begins, Thomas McCoy, just before surrendering, receives an urgent letter from his formerly betrothed Terry, which changes the course and destiny of many of the McCoy men who fought in this war. Now, before returning home, they will band together to reclaim some of the South’s wealth and heirlooms stolen by the North to finance their war. Their plan: to raid cache areas located on a map given to Tommy; cache areas guarded by northern soldiers, all while trying not to kill anyone else.

What I liked most about this story was the feeling I was one-of-the-gang; sitting next to the rest of the McCoy’s at the campfire, waiting for instructions on how we were going to “git” back what was once the souths. The hardships felt real. It was easy to imagine fishing with just a hook on a piece of string while trying to survive in 1865. The events flowed, creating a story easy to follow. I smiled while reading lines revealing family humor and comradery. The details describing duties, such as riding into town to get supplies, made the action visual and their situations believably real.

However, near the end, the most enjoyed details to the story began to sound repetitive and redundant. Repetitive, because after reading about the detailed “plans” and recon for the raids, the same material was repeated as the raids unraveled, making one-or-other of the renditions redundant. For the most part this kept the book mostly about their plans and how their plans unfolded, which in turn, made the story limited to events and not much on character development.

I gave The McCoy’s Before the Feud by Thomas McCoy 3 out of 4 stars. I happen to be a fan of old westerns, so the lack of character development was acceptable for me as the reader. Another reason I gave this rating is, the book itself was written in a professional, friendly manner and easy to follow.

If you are someone who enjoys sitting around a campfire listening to stories which include Civil War history or someone who likes to watch old westerns, then I recommend this book for you. My last thought: the pace of the book captured a simpler time in history giving the reader a chance to slow down and smell the coffee on the campfire, something I found relaxing. See for yourself!
