Final Report by Jeff Shear is a crime thriller that grabs the attention of the reader. Jackson Guild, our protagonist, is a spy and he is sent to a research facility. Guild has to collect information on a weapon far more powerful than anything ever created before. He soon realizes that it’s not just information his employers are after. A large political crime has been committed and Guild’s employers, MODULAR DOG, are forced to retaliate. He is unaware that collateral damage is unavoidable in this retaliation. Guild is ordered to get close to the creator of this unknown, ever-powerful weapon, Dr. Alessandra Almont. Unfortunately, they become romantically attached and this makes everything infinitely harder for Guild and his spy work.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. Shear has a way of keeping the reader interested. With every page, the storyline thickens and no one can guess what’s going to happen next. Even though many characters come and go throughout the book, we can identify each character. This is because Shear introduces each character in a way that makes them recognizable to the reader. As a spy, Guild has to understand the motives of each of his subjects. Along with Guild, the reader is also made aware of each character and their motives.

Even though I enjoyed reading this book, one thing that would’ve made the experience better was if the story was written in a simpler language. When describing political events that had occurred before, I lost interest because I couldn’t understand what Shear was writing about.

Another thing I loved about this book is that even till the end a sense of secrecy is maintained. There isn’t much of a sense of suspense in this book. But very often, Shear throws little bombs throughout the book, and he does this when we least expect it. When introducing new characters, Shear hides important details like little Easter eggs. The reader has to read carefully to catch all these tiny details. Even from the beginning of the book, Shear does this. The protagonist encounters a man that ends up being a fellow spy. But neither Guild nor the reader can figure this out without keeping a keen mind.

I rate this book a 4 out of 4 stars. This book is a must-read and I enjoyed reading it very much. Anyone that enjoys fast-paced spy thrillers should give this book a read. Be ready to get surprises every which way when reading.
