Review of Creating Literary Stories: A Fiction Writer's Guide
The book Creating Literacy Stories: A Fiction Writer’s Guide by William H. Coles is a manual for fiction writers. In his book; William dissected the elements of literary fiction systematically with clear illustrations. He used excerpts from his works, and that of some other authors as instances. The book is divided into two sections: the first part establishes literary fiction, and its essentials. It also defines the principles, and logic behind great literary stories and explains why some fail; the second part contains guidelines on applying, and working with the principles to amazing effect.
The book principally dealt on how to create literary stories that are different from everyday writing. It also helps writers to polish their writings to fit the literary fiction style; to ensure readers have memorable experiences from reading their stories. It takes storytelling beyond the narration of a writer's imagination, or display of creativity; to the creation of significant and meaningful stories.
The book gave me proper perspective on fictional compositions. This will help me to understand, and appreciate the beauty of literary fiction. It can also help me to decide what works for me, and to deliver critical assessments on such writings, or perhaps mine in the future.
I also enjoyed how the author embodies the famous storytelling rule "Show don't tell" in his illustrations. He clearly applied it throughout the book. An excerpt or example of a story is rephrased once or severally; showing clearly what is poorly written and what is magnificent. This can be of help to authors in coming out with the best version of their ideas.
The skillfulness of the author in his exposition on the subject created the impression that he is a great writer. It made me eager to read his books. He cited a bit from some of them in his examples. I look forward to reading them myself. The examples, illustrations, and citations from other authors' works also proved that the book isn't an abstract composition.
I also enjoyed the author's style; delving into the subject right away. In fewer but well organized pages, he moved straight to the point. This made the book easy to complete, and retain in memory. No wonder he authored short but meaningful stories.
I encountered a few errors while reading: not enough for a poor-editing call. I rate the book 4 out of 4 stars because I find no reason to deduct any star. I think every fiction writer would find this manual useful. Editors, as well as publishers, book reviewers, and literary critics should have this read. For writers the book can help with better presentation, and communication of your imagination. For others, this improves your acumen; especially for literary fictional stories.
